Hawaii, fortunately, was one of our destinations on our honeymoon in 1984.

I had written an opinion on the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand recently. This was one of the destinations, of our honeymoon, prior to Hawaii.

From Bangkok we traveled to Hong Kong and then Tokyo. It was from Tokyo that we flew to Honolulu in the month of May 1984.

We traveled on a Korean Airlines 747 which happened to my almost empty as one of their planes had just been shot down over Russia a few weeks earlier.

Your love affair with Hawaii starts as soon as you look through the window of the aircraft upon landing at the airport. Just a mass of blue ocean and suddenly you see the island. When the plane is landing it’s as if you are landing on the water and suddenly the runway materializes.

Honolulu is situated on Hawaii’s largest island, which is Oahu.

Once off the aircraft we were met with lovely weather hot and with a little wind. We passed through immigration and customs and as we were walking into the receiving area there were two lovely Hawaiian girls putting garlands of flowers on most arriving passengers. My wife got one, which she wore, all the way to the hotel.

We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. As the name suggests it’s like a little town unto itself. It has everything from its own private helicopter that you can take for tours around the islands, multiple swimming pools, amusement arcade, a multitude of shops and boutiques, travel agents, tour operators, rent-a-car bureaus etc.
As was the case in Bangkok they upgraded us to a Junior Suite and charged us for a Double Room, after we told them that we were honeymooners.

We stayed for 10 days and during this time we had the most enjoyable experience and probably the best of our complete honeymoon.

There are just so many places and attractions to visit.

For the first 3 days we took the various tours from our hotel and for the next week we rented a car from Avis and explored the city ourselves.

I remember one night, when we were trying to locate a free car park, I unintentionally went down a one-way street and while trying to reverse back out I was stopped by a policeman (cop as the Americans like to say). When we explained that we were on holidays and on our honeymoon he was really very nice and just gave me a warning. He then gave us directions.

The people are really very friendly and helpful. The whole place is just bubbling with life and passion.

Some of the places that were visited (we still have some the pamphlets and brochures in an album) were:

.Hanauma Bay
This was probably our favourite place. When you swim here you literally swim amongst thousands of tropical fish. You can even see them without going under the water because the water is so clear. You can also snorkel and you can rent all the equipment inexpensively right on the beach. The water is shallow so you don't have to be a professional swimmer to have fun. The water here is just unbelievable. It has the most shades of green and blue I have ever seen in my life. It’s just so hard to explain unless you see it for yourself.

Iolani Palace and Bishop Museum
Iolani Palace was the home of Queen Lilu'okalani who ruled Hawaii until the Americans took over. The Hawaiian people have great history and custom and this can be seen in the palace and the museum. It is really interesting to learn who these islands were founded.

Pali Lookout
The Pali Lookout is just awesome. You look over the edge of a mountain into a huge valley.
The scenery is breathtaking and the wind that swirls around in the valley is strong. Its as if you come to a different country altogether here.

Waikiki
Waikiki is situated in the heart of Honolulu and has many shops and restaurants and all the hustle and bustle. Also the beach, which is, jam-packed everywhere. Some areas of the beach have strong surf, which is good for surfing.
We only visited this beach once and later found other lovely less crowded and more beautiful beaches elsewhere.

There are so many other places which I cant remember but even if I could the list would go on an on.

The nightlife is also great and goes on 24 hours. There are so many different shows, performances and dancing. Its impossible to visit everything.

Hawaii overall is a lovely place to visit for holidays and gives you the combination of natural beauty and paradise and also the busy urban life, shopping and nightlife.

If you ever get the chance you must visit.

Some of your description reminds me of the Seychelles. It is definitely a place I want to go. Just need the money, and I don't think writing ops here is likely to generate enough. VH. Dave

Excellent travel op. This is definitely a place I once have to travel to, although I would probably be heading for the smaller islands. Cheers, Hans

Hawaii certainly has an appeal, although it does come across as being a bit too commercialised. Enjoyed your opinion though - cheers, Phil :O)
