CARMONA (not a back-seat driver)

Advantages: More history than you can shake a centurion's spear at
Disadvantages: May be too quiet for some

of the original minaret. It's hardly York Minster, but it's interesting enough and there are quite a few architectural oddities to wonder at. Just a little further on is the Museo de la Ciudad. Housed in an old palace, the museum opened in 1996 and presents a history of Carmona from 3,000Bc until the present. Exhibits range from archaeological finds uncovered in the immediate area, to the development of the walled city from Roman times through the medieval period and beyond. It has quite a large collection of artifacts and displays and gives an excellent explanation of the life and growth of the town. For a very reasonable ? 2, it's an enjoyable and educational way to spend a couple of hours during the siesta when most everything else is closed. There's not really a lot more to the old town - at least not in the form of attractions ...

Gateau de Noël à la mode du torr

Advantages: A Christmas cake's a scrumptious treat
Disadvantages: Too rich with so much else to eat?

done, And if you've kids they'll have some fun With sticking on the marzipan (First rolled out flat, then glued with jam). Next mix the icing (what, can't hack it? You'll find instructions on the packet), Smooth on, and top with, let us say, A sugar Santa on a sleigh. Despite the glut of festive fare - Mince pies, plum puddings, choc éclairs - Young appetites are never beaten I know the cake will soon be eaten. My elder son alone can swallow Half a cake and still feel hollow. For cakeivores like him there's no Such thing at Christmas as "de trop". Although they've done their share of cookin' Mere parents may not get a look in. To guard against this dread disaster At sleight of hand become a master, And bake an extra cake to hide, Your secret treat at Christmastide. © torr 2007 Footnotes, in case ...

A Palatial Hotel fit for a Queen

Advantages: A wonderfully characteristic hotel
Disadvantages: None

Carmona is a town with a very long history and is situated about 30km east of Seville. It lies astride the NIV Seville-Cordoba highway so the town is very easy to find. The Alcazar de la Reina Hotel is situated in the heart of the old town. It's not hard to find as it's more than adequately signposted, but it's still a bit of an ordeal driving to it. The old town was not designed with the automobile in mind (in fact I doubt whether the wheel was even invented when much of this place was built!) and you must negotiate a torturous and convoluted route through the incredibly narrow streets and lanes (all one way). The streets are so tight, it could be quite hair-raising - I don't have much hair so I was alright. When we eventually cleared the claustrophobic streets, we found ourselves at one of the highest points of the town with a car ...
