Advantages: Within the town of Funchal with all its amenities Disadvantages: Steep climb back up to the hotel
...We stayed at the Quinta Bella Sao Tiego on our second visit to Madeira. It has a lovely outlook over the old town of Funchal. The room and room service were very good, well upto 4* standard. A fault with the ventilation in the bathroom was fixed quickly and politely. Receptionists were particularly helpful. The pool area is small, but adequate. Breakfast was good with a range of cold and cooked choices. We didn't eat there in the evening as there were so many great eateries in the vacinity. We loved the "smaller hotel" feel after staying in the larger, less personal one in the Lido area. The only problem with the hotel is that it is up a steep hill - great for going down to the town, but not so good when you return. There are loads of restaurants nearby, from a good Pizza place, to more expensive fish restaurants. It would...

Advantages: Clean, friendly staff, in good restaurant territory Disadvantages: At the top of a great big hill, evening 'entertainment'
...We booked this hotel though Expedia, having chosen it from the many hotels in and around Funchal. We were visiting Funchal in November (still lovely weather for this time of year).
Arriving
We arrived quite late at night (near midnight). Having got a taxi from the airport we were dropped right at the door and didn't see much until the next day. Reception quickly checked us in and we went off to our room. Seemed clean and friendly enough.
The room
We had a twin room which was quite small, but we weren't looking to spend a great deal of time in it. There was a reasonably sized bathroom with bath/shower, sink and toilet.
There was a tv in the room with various music channels, a fridge, a safe box and a lovely view over Funchal. There was plenty of wardrobe space. The room was cleaned daily and kept in good condition.

Advantages: Beautiful picturesque island, not too hot in summer Disadvantages: Hilly, poor restaurants, no sandy beaches
..., they are coloured bright yellow and most of them are Mercedes C or S Class cars so there is a lot of room and comfort in them. Fares are quite reasonable with a fare from Funchal to our hotel (near the lido) costing around 5 Euros (about £3.50).
By Bus- A cheaper form of transport are the buses, these are also yellow, but are less comfortable to get around. The buses are shorter than UK buses and have a high passenger compartment area so getting into them requires steep steps, which could be hard for those with children or walking difficulties. We used the bus once and found it hot, airless and an uncomfortable ride, but I would still recommend them if you want to get around cheaply. A fare from Funchal to the Botanical gardens cost 1 Euro 30 (90p) per adult each way.

I found the restaurants in Madeira to be a disappointment for three...

We had an enjoyable stay at this hotel.
What sold the hotel to us was its look. It has a traditional colonial appearance; a Madeira building that guests must have stayed at a 100 years ago. It has its own unique character and is such a contrast to all... more
The Savoy Resort is pretty much amazing and we found it offers the most outstanding customer service ever! The Atlantic views are incredible and it is only located about 10 mins pleasant walk along the harbour from the centre of Funchal, Madeira's... more
Madeira is an island in the Atlantic Ocean, sometimes called the Pearl of the Atlantic or the floating garden, the flowers are magnificent here and it is a very green island, because of the careful usage of water and the mild climate.
