Anyway, once you have survived the bus ride, you can calm down and relax in the isolated towns of Amalfi and Positano. Both are worth a visit, and both exude charm from their every pore.
Amalfi is the larger of the two towns and is slightly farther south. It has a very impressive Duomo, or domed church, which is distinguishable on the city's skyline from almost any vantage. The city is filled with gelaterias and cafes, and can be enjoyed leisurely as there aren't a great deal of activities outside of relaxation. The view from the beach onto the town and hills above is stunning. The mostly white buildings and impressive green valleys are the reason postcards were invented.
If you plan on finding a hotel in Amalfi and it is peak tourist season, you will definitely need reservations. Don't expect...

Advantages: Amazing pool, friendly staff, private sea access Disadvantages: None
...I stayed at the Hotel Miramalfi on my honeymoon, we left home the day after our wedding and travelled to Amalfi. I have never, in my life been so tired - so wanted to sleep, sunbathe and spend quality time with my husband!
The first thing to know about this hotel is that the nearest hotel is Naples which is a €80 taxi ride away and not only is it an expensive trip it is terrifying. Combine the hair pin bends with Italian boy racers who think they are racing drivers right up your tail or overtaking on the blind corners! Top tip - arrive in Naples early and take the boat for €10 and arrive in Amalfi in style.
The hotel is situated approximately 10 - 15 minutes walk up the hilll from Amalfi town or a short, cheap taxi ride. It has 4* but I think it is better than the 5* hotel just up the hill. The location is perfect - you are removed...

...As anyone who has read my early reviews knows- I love Italy! I've been going there now for the past ten years with my parents, and for the first time last year I made my own way there with the boyfriend for a nice Italian holiday. The Grand Hotel Excelsior was my residence for numerous weeks holiday, and it certainly not one for the faint hearted! In the Thompson guide book it is described as 'quaint' which to put it politely is rather an understatement. One thing that can be said for it is it is completely oozing with Italian charm.
ARRIVAL/ LOCATION
If you book with Thompson as we did (though other tour operators go to the same location) flights go from Manchester Airport on a Friday morning, taking just over 2 and a half hours to get to Naples International Airport. From Naples the coastal resort of Amalfi is approximately two...

Advantages: Beautiful, Italian, romantic Disadvantages: Very narrow roads and very hilly
...The Amalfi coast is possibly one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world. We got engaged there, in Ravello, so it obviously holds a very special place in my heart. There are several towns which are beautiful to stay in. We were based in Positano which is split into 2 areas by a deep ravine. All hotels are ont eh cliff face with fantastic views out to sea. Positano can get a bit touristy in high season so I would recomend going in Spring time - late April through to early June. There are also many good places to eat to suit most budgets and a couple of very special hotels if your budget allows. Otherwise there are plenty of excellent guest houses which are clean and comfortable.
Amalfi itself is an historically interesting town and well worth a visit. As is Ravello on the top of the hills, famous for Wagner stories...
