"Member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the Year"

As a surprise (good behaviour??), hubby booked a 3 night short break to Budapest, it being a place I had shown an interest in visiting.

We arrived in Budapest in the evening and because it was snowing heavily and we had no idea where we were going, we jumped into a taxi and gave the address of the hotel. After a relatively short and very picturesque drive, we arrived at the hotel which is situated on a wide tree lined avenue, Andrassy Ut. We later found out that this is the principal thoroughfare in Budapest and is known as the Champs Elysees of Hungary, situated as it is in the Embassy district, and close to major attractions.

**First Impressions**

These are always important, and as the taxi pulled up into the front area which was rather like a modern cobbled courtyard, these first impressions were excellent. The art deco building was building was built in the 1930s and was completely revamped in 2001, and is entered through large glass doors. What was immediately noticeable was the soft glow of the muted lighting shining through the large windows and the doors.

On entering the hotel, the entrance area was relatively small, containing two low long tables with sofas at each side, each with a side table and useful books (if you could read Hungarian). It didn't matter- the pictures were lovely and were showing scenes of the country- proper "table top" books.

So, I plonked myself down whilst himself checked us in, which was done with minimum fuss, there being no sign of any other guests apart from ourselves. So, no queue, just heavily falling snow outside, soft lighting, and a feeling of having been transported back in time.

A porter was quickly dispatched to take us to our room, up in one of the two lifts; we didn't even have to carry our own bags so I was feeling a proper lady of leisure. What had I done to deserve this??

**The Bedrooms**

We had one of the Deluxe rooms, although there are a selection of rooms, including standard single and double rooms, Superior Rooms and suites.

As we walked through the door, I noticed a full length window, leading out onto a balcony, which was great for sitting on for some snow bathing.

The room was spacious and again the lighting was fabulous. I think this is what I noticed mostly about this hotel-none of the stark lighting you sometimes get in hotels. The room had a four poster bed-not the kind with drapes all swags all over the place, rather a metal bed with a bit of "out of Africa" gauze type material at the top. I certainly didn't think we were going to encounter a plague of mosquitos, because still the snow fell. There was also a writing desk, mini bar, a safe about the size of a laptop, telephone, and satellite tv. The wardrobes had plenty of hanging space, and, most importantly, 12 coat hangers-a record!!

Best of all, complimentary (although probably included in the price) was a bottle of champagne, fresh fruit and mineral water- to tempt our appetites for the mini bar.

**Bathroom**

Just off the bedroom was the bathroom. The bath itself appeared sunken but that was because you had to climb a few steps and then lower yourself into it. In contrast to the bedroom and entrance lobby, this was all bright lighting, although still following an art deco theme, with blue and yellow walls and tasteful pictures even in the bathroom.
When I go to hotels, I always like the toiletries, and these were fab. They were small thin bottles of shampoo, conditioner, mouth wash, bath gel etc, all on a specially made wooden stand...nice.

**Restaurant**

Having got ready, we decided to have a little wander about to check out the hotel, and see what it was like (as you do!1)
The Zebrano restaurant is understated elegance, and when we were there seemed to be devoted entirely to the clerics.
It is situated just off the entrance area, partitioned off with a water feature and glass panels. Walk inside and there is a small bar seating about 10 people, and ideal for the odd cocktail or four...lovely cocktails they are too (and I am so not a cocktail drinker!).
The eating area itself seats 75 people and the menu suggested that it served a mix of asian and French cuisine, and is apparantly quite famous for its food. However, wanting a bit of local culture, we decided not to eat in the restaurant.

**Hotel information**
For guests in its 71 rooms, this has all the usual amenities you would expect:
parking, restaurant, bar, 24hour front desk, non smoking rooms, airport shuttle, soundproof rooms (??), laundry, dry cleaning, 24 hour room service etc.
There are also 5 meeting rooms, with capacities for between 15 and 25 people, and there are business services provided.

**Local Landmarks**

Buda Castle 3km
National Opera House 1km
Parliament 2km
City Centre 2km
Buda Hills 10km

**Verdict**

We had a FAB time in Budapest- the city seems to never sleep, even when it is sub zero temperatures and the snow still falls. We found a great bar/cavern-Piaf's and the hotel staff were very understandable about us coming in and going straight for breakfast.
The hotel itself is, as I mentioned, on an extremely quiet avenue, and is very near the underground (an experience in itself).
The hotel is included in the Small Luxury Hotels recommendation-Hungary's first and this is very well deserved.
the staff were extremely helpful, the whole hotel was spotlessly clean and there was a definite aura of a past time elegance.
It is a gem of a hotel. I have stayed in many hotels, some of which claim to be luxury hotels, but this really does deserve inclusion in the Small Luxury Hotels. It is small, and this is part of its charm. There are no queues to get into the lift, no queues for breakfast, just friendly staff who want to help.
Actually I think we may have been the only people there.
Thanks for reading and if you ever get the chance, check this one out!!
