This, the home of soccer club AjaxAmsterdam, and occasionally hosting the Amsterdam Admirals' home games in NFL Europe, has a capacity of 50,820. It is quite an imposing sight - built on the outskirts of Amsterdam, it is visible from a great distance, over the flat green pastures that characterize the approaching land. To reach the stadium, it is advisable to get off at Duivendrecht train station. It is relatively simple to get a direct train from Amsterdam Central Station.
One of the stadium's foremost features is its retractable roof. This roof can prove very useful in wet weather, covering the pitch and keeping it safe from the rain. In total, the opening or closing of the roof takes about twenty minutes to accomplish. The lighting system is installed directly under the roof, removing the need for conventional floodlights. Say goodbye to restricted view seats!
Every time I have visited the ArenA, I have sat in the lower section of the upper tier. This provides a fantastic view of the match. However, the height of the seat, coupled with the large gutter dividing front-row seats from the field, means that one is somewhat removed from the action. Managers could actually do worse than analyze the match from such a vantage point, were it not for the need to shout instructions at the players.
If you fancy a snack or a beer at half time, the ArenA is equipped with the expected fast food outlets. All of them are set in a kind of outer tunnel which goes completely around the stadium, and which you walk along to eventually get to your seat. Unfortunately, a rather annoying card system is in use here, which you must abide by to get served at all. One needs to buy credits (“ArenAs” or “ArenA cards”) from various vendors standing around the place. These are available in common denominations (e.g. 10 guilders, or about £2.60). It is these you use to get food or drink.
I would recommend seeing a game of Ajax, who are in a transitional phase at the moment with several promising players. I must say though that I was a bit disappointed with the atmosphere. The crowd was not quite as supportive of the home side as for instance, at Upton Park, or at NAC Breda’s home ground, despite the fact that the ArenA is bigger than both these stadiums put together. The crowd made noise as soon as some goalmouth action occurred, but were often strangely silent when the ball was in midfield. Little effort was made to roar the home side forward when in possession. I suppose this is to be expected, though, as in a large stadium the hard-core supporters are often diluted by many more temperate spectators.
This aside, the ArenA is a must-see in Amsterdam, for any veteran of foreign stadiums. I hope such people are lucky enough to catch a home game.
