It cost approximately Ł135 to fly to Budapest in March and spend 3 nights in the Hotel Budapest. I thought this was very reasonable, and particularly so when I reached the hotel, which is located on the Buda side of the city.
One thing to remember is that most people who provide any sort of service for you will expect some sort of tip. The hotel reception was welcoming and helpful (didn’t feel the need to tip here) and a porter was dispatched to carry my daughter’s and my luggage and to escort us up to our room on the 13th floor (tip required here). Needless to say the view of the city was impressive.
The room itself was basic, but extremely clean. The beds were comfortable, the windows opened and the heating was adjustable. Unusually there were no little bars of soap in the bathroom and tea making facilities were not provided, which was my greatest regret. The room also had a phone, shoe polishing kit, bedside lamps, chairs, table and tv. All in all, quite adequate for what we needed and at no great cost.
Not being large eaters, we didn’t eat at the hotel. There are various little local shops a short walk along the road where it is possible to buy bread, fruit, bottled water and other basics, particularly for a light breakfast.
A note about travelling around Budapst
When you visit an unfamiliar place for a very short time, you need to find out how to get around as soon as possible. Budapest is not a large city, but walking everywhere is still quite tiring and time-consuming. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to Moszkva tér, where you can buy tickets for buses and trams. Alternatively, directly opposite the hotel is a train station and a tram stop. A one or three day roaming ticket will permit you to travel anywhere in the city by train, tram or bus. Look out for the little kiosks that sell these tickets. Also near Mostzka tér are lots of shops, two very large modern shopping malls (lots of cups of tea on sale here!) and a local market selling a wide range of products.
