Hotel Di-Ann was a good value, except for the room key. When checking in, we were asked to make a 20 euro deposit on the room key. When we questioned this, the clerk told us it was a standard procedure there, and that it was only a deposit. The money would be refunded upon checkout. We forgot to ask for the refund, and the deposit was not automatically refunded.. We only remembered it when we were already out of the city.
Upon retrospect, this seemed like a good trick for a desk clerk to make a quick 20 euro in a city like Amsterdam, where a tourist is quite unlikely to remember the deposit by the time they check out.
Refuse to pay any deposit on the room key, or demand to see the manager if the clerk is persistant on the matter.
