Advantages: Lovely scenery and a great base to explore more of this area Disadvantages: Expensive to eat out - but isn't all of Switzerland
...streets, with their painted buildings, stopping, frequently, for coffee in one of the many cafes or shops. I was amazed to find that not only did many of the shops, such as the bathroom sellers, also sell coffee - smokers were not frowned upon in the same way they are in England. All the cafes we visited had smoking throughout - so not a place to spend a lot of time if you are vehemently anti-smoking.
Lucerne is also a great place to use as a base to explore more of the country by train and we did this every other day, visiting Engleberg, St Moritz and Zug. Though you could travel further with the rail pass we bought. Travelling by train is a really good way to get around in Switzerland - the trains are reliable, warm and comfortable.
There are plenty of hotels and guest houses in Lucerne and whilst this may not be the cheapest holiday you...

...I stayed here with my mom for 1 night in Luzern (July 2006) and we were both happy with the room. Before spending a night in Luzern, we have stayed in Geneva, Montreux and Interlaken (4 different hotels throughout our stay in Switzerland). We paid the least for our room in Luzern and yet it's better than the most expensive one we paid for.

(Hotel Des Alpes is next door and it's almost double this rate). After I booked a double room with Hotel Pickwick, I searched for reviews online and someone mentioned that no towel is provided + services not great. - Fyi, I paid CHF 140 for a pension in Montreux and CHF 135 for a double room ensuite with air conditioning in old town...
