Hotel Galleria, Subotica

...a quick search for a hotel threw up a wide variety of options but when we came across the Hotel galleria, it really was no contest.

Although the hotel is in the centre of town, it's really easy to find. It's just a couple of turns off the main drag and it's well signposted. Parking is free in an underground car park which is always a bonus.

Subotica is just a few miles over the Hungarian border and so gets quite a few visitors from there I expect. It's certainly a place worth visiting and with the nearby lake palic tourist area, there's no shortage of accommodation in the area.
We were only stopping there for one night on our way to Bulgaria and a quick search for a hotel threw up a wide variety of options but when we came across the Hotel galleria, it really was no contest.

Although the hotel is in the centre of town, it's really easy to find. It's just a couple of turns off the main drag and it's well signposted. Parking is free in an underground car park which is always a bonus.

The hotel is a modern building but sits well amongst its surroundings and blends in nicely. It's a six storey building set around a central atrium which houses a shopping centre and some office accommodation.

Checking-in was simple enough with a friendly receptionist who thankfully spoke far more English than we did Serbian. So, without much fuss, we were soon whizzing our way up to our room on the first floor.

The room was lovely. I have to say that everything about the hotel was spic-n-span and in mint condition. I think the hotel was only completed in the last few years so I suppose it should've been in good nick. interestingly, although this is a new build, the decor was rather old-fashioned in style.

The room was not really like a hotel room - it didn't have that anonymous and bland feel that you usually get. The furniture and furnishings were rich and luxurious yet homely. We had two twin beds which,although comfortable enough, were just a little on the small side but a choice of pillows helped compensate for this. There was an old fashioned desk or work station and a sideboard which housed the mini-bar and was crowned with a large TV with around 50 channels in various languages including, for a change, a decent amount of English language channels. What'smore, a lot of Serbian channels were subtitled in Serbian but had the original language. There was also pay TV. With all these options, we really didn't struggle to find anything to watch...mainly because we went out!

There was also a table and chairs with a vase of flowers as decoration but the nicest feature, for me at least, was the headboard. This rose from floor level to ceiling and housed bedside cabinets, various lighting options and full height shelving which was bedecked with ornaments and lots of books - some antique. The books were very interesting - Agatha Christie in Serbian has a certain charm!
Plush carpeting, fancy curtains and lots of ambient lighting completed the comforts of the room.
We had a large window but as we were on the first floor, not much of a view...and the Air conditioning worked a treat.

The bathroom was none too shabby either. gleaming would be the word to describe this room. Fully tiled, everything was spotless and in pristine condition. there were plenty of quality toiletries, right down to disposable toothbrushes and toothpaste and the towels were huge, soft and fluffy. The shower was powerful with a deep bath tub and there was a full wall mirror which was well lit. The final touch was two bathrobes and two pairs of disposable slippers.

The hotel has several bars and a restaurant. We didn't use them although we had breakfast which was served on the top floor with stunning panoramas of the town. Breakfast was good with a a hot option - sausages, bacon, eggs, and a continental buffet with cold meats, cheeses, fruits, yoghurts and cakes.

As I said, the hotel was in the centre of town and it was simply a matter of crossing the road outside to find yourself in a pedestrianised street lined with bars, cafe's and restaurants which led to the main street (again pedestrianised) and on to the main square.
Subotica is a picture postcard town and the architecture is stunning. There is quite a lot of development going on, with new building and renovations so it can only get better.

The hotel has 78 rooms from doubles right up to a presidential suite and rates range from 72 euros to 270. We booked through another site and managed to get our room for 50 euros which included breakfast...a bargain.

In conclusion. this was a peach of an hotel. I can't think of anything bad to say about it at all and the level of comfort at this price was amazing. The town is lovely, the location of the hotel perfect and the amenities first class. If I ever return to this area, I wouldn't even look at another hotel. Highly recommended.
