The Best Western Gleneagles describes itself as been located in a chic area of Torquay which is about 12 min taxi ride from the station, It boasts 41 modern rooms many of which have ocean views and all of which have private balconies, all rooms are tastefully designed with en suite bathroom, TV, hairdryer and hot drinks refreshment tray. Prices can vary depending on the time of year you visit this hotel and if any special offers are present.
I myself was attending a trade show in Torquay and required a smoking room of which I was informed this hotel has 11 such rooms for those wishing to smoke, the rest of the hotel is of course non smoking to comply with regulations. This was a prime reason for choosing Gleneagles for my Torquay hotel as many other hotels are totally non smoking.
I arrived late afternoon and was informed that the hotel is totally a non smoking hotel in all areas. I reminded the receptionist that my reservation was accepted on the understanding of having a smoking room, to which she informed me well OK this must have been arranged, I was given my door key.
The room itself was not what I would expect from a Best Western hotel, the room décor looked very dated and the walls looked slightly worse for wear, the bathroom was extremely small with only a 3 feet square area to stand, the toilet roll holder was broken and only third of a roll left, there was a shabby under sink unit and a bit of blue carpet on the floor. Not what I am used to and expect from any hotel.
Having a large amount of work to perform before the next day I ordered through room service scampi, fries and peas to be sent to my room so that I could continue working. This arrived with 15 min and the staff member seemed to be in quite a hurry as he dumped the meal on a small table and left faster then he arrived
The meal was luck warm and it seemed it was microwaved set meal, but at that time I was hungry and eat it.
Breakfast again was on the chilled side and comprised of a English breakfast with toast.
One point of the visit which I was disgusted at apart from the poor room and food was that on check out I discovered a drinks bill (I am tea total) and for my room service was charged £3.50 extra.
Overall this hotel is not one I would eagerly use again, in fact would never use again.
