The Hotel:
Hotel Greulich is a "Design Hotel" located close to the centre of Zurich (Switzerland) and is named after Herman Greulich, a Polish social reformer who emigrated to Switzerland and founded the first Socialist Party of Switzerland (the hotel is situated on the corner of Herman-Greulich Strasse).
On arrival, my wife and I were a bit disappointed with the building from the outside. Although it was a unusual and cool exterior design, it looked like it needed sprucing up a bit. The windows on the 1st floor and above looked quite old, etc. but at ground floor level, it did look "Design", with a modern looking bar and restaurant.
After parking in the secure car park behind the hotel (20 Swiss Francs (CHF) per day), we checked in at reception and were taken to our room. The room was in a small interior courtyard with a modern design and with a small garden. Obviously this part was built or refubished much more recently than the other side of the hotel, so the windows were not a problem!
The Room:
We'd booked a normal room but had been upgraded to junior suite free of charge and the suite was very nice. It really fitted with the "Design" aesthetic, with a minimalist style, mostly white walls and a smattering of light wood surfaces.
Our room was split on two levels, the entrance level featuring a large bed (200x200cm), a discrete wardrobe and a very cool bathroom (more on that later). The upper level featured a sofa, small retro tv and a bench area with a chair, internet cable, working space, etc. and a large window looking out on a garden. Unfortunately the garden was overlooked by apartment blocks so you'd be advised to close the blackout curtains if you wanted some privacy.
Back on the ground level, the bathroom section was separated from the bed area by a frosted perspex 'wall'. Immediately behind the wall was a very nice bath and a washbasin and then separated behind another frosted wall, was the toilet and shower. The opposite wall of the toilet/shower area was a glass window separately you from the courtyard outside. Of course the window was heavily frosted and an electric blind could also be lowered if you felt a bit exposed (we did check if it was possible to see through the glass, fortunately you couldn't!).
Otherwise the rooms have been designed to make excellent use of natural light. In the morning, we thought we'd left an orange light switched on overnight but it turned out to be a small window facing a wall (hidden from normal view) which had been painted orange. The result was a very natural looking light in the room. Various blinds and lighting fixtures can all be controlled with remotes.
Cleanliness:
We couldn't fault the cleanliness of the room. It was spotless. I'm sure it's not easy to keep such perfectly white rooms so clean and free from blemishes but ours was immaculate.
Extras:
The usual branded toiletries and free bottled water was provided. As were an internet cable for free internet access, an umbrella, a yoga mat, flip-flops and dressing gowns.
Restaurant & Bar:
The design of both was nice but we didn't try them as we visit Zurich quite often and wanted to eat in our favourite restaurant there but when we came back to the hotel quite late, the restaurant and bar were still very busy, which is a good sign I suppose. We skipped the hotel breakfast too and headed into town for brunch. It looked typical continental breakfast fair, some muesli, cereal, croissants, cheese and cooked meats.
The Staff:
All members of staff that we had contact with were polite, friendly and attentive.
Environment:
Be warned, one of the main roads to the town centre is full of "Gentlemens Clubs" and there were a few undesirable types hanging around too. This can be easily avoided by taking another route into town, or driving/taking a taxi. In any case, Switzerland is a very safe country and although it pays to be wary, you're unlikely to have any trouble. In general, Zurich is a nice, cosmopolitan city with plenty to see.
Price:
We paid the internet price for a normal room of 285 CHF per night (around £170 with todays exchange rate). The normal internet price for a Junior Suite is 360 CHF (around £215) so this isn't cheap but it is a design hotel so you should expect to pay a premium (and it is in Switzerland where absolutely nothing is cheap!).
Overall:
We really enjoyed our stay at the Greulich and would definitely go back there one day. Recommended.
