We chose the HotelIbisAmsterdam Westcorner for a weekend trip to Amsterdam.
The HotelIbis Westcorner is located in Westpoort, to the north-west of the city centre. Because of this it probably isn't too popular with tourists who prefer central locations. However, it is very easy to get to - just take the train to Sloterdjik station, 6 minutes and one stop away from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Almost every train west from Amsterdam stops there, so you can get back late at night without any problems, and it's also relatively cheap, at under 2 Euros one-way. There is also a bus, but we didn't try it. Actually, we found the tyrain station by trial and error - when we asked the hotel staff how to get in to the centre, they didn't even mention it, and we had trouble navigating to it from the hotel, as Westpoort is a district of tall ...

The hotel that we had booked was the four star 'Jolly Carlton'. I had a look on the internet and it seemed wonderful.
We were told that check in wasn't until 2pm, but when we arrived in Amsterdam in the morning, we though that we would go to the hotel to see if we could leave our luggage there so we didn't have to drag it around the city until 2pm.
The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the central station, which we managed no problem, even with our luggage. If you don't want to walk then there are also several trams you can take, either from the central station or from the centre of the town, though it really isn't that far and it is a fairly flat road all the way, and it means you can window shop as you walk! Coming and going from the hotel is easy as there are staff on reception 24 hours a day. If it is late, you have to ring a night bell but the response is immediate. There are 2 lifts to all floors and an electronic paper stand nearby at an extra cost.
Overall, I had a wonderful first trip in Amsterdam and a wonderful stay in this cheap and cheerful hotel. I would recommend this hotel to all budget travellers, groups/students etc but not to families or the elderly. I am returning to Amsterdam in May 2006 with my partner but am staying nearer the city centre in the floating hotel, the Amstel Botel and so will let you all know what that is like when I return.
