Advantages: Great location, cheap Disadvantages: No air-con, noise from traffic and cleaners
It's a trade off which often crops up when arranging accommodation for city breaks - a central location costs more but in the end you may spend as much on transport as you think you've already saved.
In June my partner and I spent a week in Naples. He was there for a few days for work, I would do my own thing for the first couple of days then we would have a couple more days to ourselves. We needed to be fairly close to the centre for the wok engagements but cost was our primary concern. Sadly Ciao could not help so we trawled through pages and pages of websites, eventually finding HotelIdeal. True to its name it did sound like a very good option - close to the city's main bus and train stations, near to Naples' main shopping area and only a short walk away from the sea; the price was reasonable and it did have a double room ...
Advantages: Great Location Disadvantages: A Bit expensive
I stayed at this hotel last weekend 19/20 November 2006 for one night. I paid GBP 160 but also had to pay GBP 10 extra for VAT. This included breakfast and was for a sea view double room.
The hotel is situated on the sea front and is about 15 - 20 mins walk from the train station (which can be a bit annoying especially if you are carrying luggage). But it is a straight road down and then turn left at the end. You cant miss the hotel as it stands out quite a bit from the others. It is glass fronted and is a lot bigger than some of the smaller hotels you may pass. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from Brighton Pier (come out of the hotel and turn left - you cant miss it)
Once we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with a flight of stairs to the reception area(about 10) and the lift did not seem like it was for for hotel guests ...
Advantages: Good rooms, well organised conference facilities Disadvantages: If you aren't there for a conference, you could feel very 'left out'.
I'm a member of an industry association that holds a two day meeting every year in spring and we move the venue around between different hotels, typically in the Midlands. Last year we were in Rugby at the Dunchurch Park which had excellent conference rooms but dreadful accommodation. This year, the organisers found a new place for us to use - Ettington Chase near Stratford upon Avon.
I travelled down from the North West on the day of the conference and my sat nav had no problems finding the hotel. When I pulled off the road into the car park I found a very beautiful old building that looked like a Victorian vicarage but was completely swamped by the size of the new wing. As so often happens, the website shows lots of pictures of the old building and not so many of the rather characterless red-brick block that provides most ...
