Kastoria in northern Greece is a fantastic place to visit for a weekend; the small town hangs of the mountains over a picturesque lake. Alas its name-sake in Thessaloniki has nothing in common. It is a grotty hotel smack-bang in the centre of Thessalonica.
I arrived in Thessaloniki at shortly midnight after a rather long journey; with just €100 in my pocket (most of that destined to be eaten by Taxis) I needed somewhere cheap and central. The taxi took me to road the Hotel Kastoria was on, and told me I had two choices from here. Kastoria and somewhere else. As I had visited the town of Kastoria a few times before, so I held up hope for the Hotel Kastoria, and staggered across the road.
After my long trip it is not surprising I fell sleep almost straight away only to wake up itching an hour later. Ditching the bedding, and using my coat as a pillow, and spare clothes as a sheet I dropped off for a broken, itchy night.
Many moons ago I was in the TA, and have spend more than a few nights in a muddy field in the middle of nowhere. As a skint student, I've crashed on floors who have never felt the loving kiss of a hoover. I have never felt the need to shower more than the morning after the night here.
I tried to clean my self in the hand basin provided. Somewhere in the building I am sure was a shower, but given the state of the room I did not think it was worth the risk so paid up and left, vowing never to return. Later that day my girlfriend informed me that the Hotel Kastoria was well known as the worst hotel in Thessaloniki, and I can see why.
Value for money While this hotel is very cheap (~€15 a night) for €15 more you can get somewhere clean, with a bathroom, and helpful staff. Plus leaving a hotel first thing in the morning feeling desperate for a shower is not how anyone wants to start their day.
Quality of Rooms The furnisher was falling apart, and held together with tap.
Standard of Service I'm taking this to mean staff, while they did little more than grunt at me, all I did was speak English slowly, and break the Greece language in unpleasant ways. I should just be happy they understood me.
Quality of Food & Drink I've no idea if any food was included. Given the cleanliness of the room, I would not have risked it if it was.
Cleanliness Unpleasant, but I did not see any creepy-crawlies dashing about the walls.
Quality of Facilities You got a room, and for €15 you can not expect anything else. But given the room was dirty, you can rate they quality of it any higher than that of Cleanliness.
Views It is a hotel in the center of a large city, so the options are drunken urbanities, or dirty walls. I got the walls. I'm sure if I asked nicely I could have got drunken urbanities.
Would I recommend it to anyone else? If I was in the same situation again, I'd sleep in the airport as its cleaner, a more pleasant environment and just a little more uncomfortable. I'd recommend the same to you.
