...Beautiful City, Excellent Night Life If you never been there it's a must. How do I know this? I'm Portuguese and used to live about 4 miles from there. I think 34 years it's enough to know that Porto is a Beautiful city with the Douro River (you can make a trip by ferry departing from Ribeira to Spain) as a great landscape and of course the tasteful Port (you can visit the Porto caves where this wine is made). If you're looking for fun, I suggest going to Ribeira and Foz where you can find great bars and discos. In the summer you have several beaches to go (not far from Porto, 4/5 miles away), among them Miramar it's a great one and there is a great Hotel as well, and again great fun at night(better go to Francelos for fun 1 or 2 miles away from Miramar) If you like to shop and good restaurants, either you can go to Boavista (the... Advantages: Smaller hotel with good sea views in old town area
Disadvantages: Staff are not pro-active in leisure areas and only helpful when asked

...Normally we stay at Porto Santa Maria in the old town of Funchal but as the hotel was fully booked we located Quinta Bela Sao Tiago in the same area. The idea of a smaller hotel appealed but sadly the facilities and service were well short of those experienced at Porto Santa Maria. The negatives were a lack of coffee or food preparation facilities in the rooms, a steep walk to the hotel so not suitable for the elderly without transport, poor organisation at breakfast and many items of food not replenished when consumed so an early start is needed, little service in the pool area (normally one would expect a waiter to be around to serve drinks/sandwiches) and a general lack of atmosphere. Room and reception service were very good and as expected for a 4 star hotel. If we re-visited Madiera again we would definitlely book earlier... Read review

Advantages: Easy access to all activities and public transport.
Disadvantages: Probably quite expensive!

...This is a beautiful hotel situated right at the end of the main promanade in Funchal. The views across the ocean, and into the city are perfect, with the sun setting over golden cliffs to the west in the evening towards the harbour. The hotel is situated right by the cable car and taxi rank, with the city centre on your door step, yet it is not a busy area, with very little noise. I have sat by the hotel reading a book in the shade many a time, enjoying the sound of the ocena and not much more. I attended a party at this hotel, a wedding, and it really is outstanding inside, although unfortunately, I didnt get a chance to see any of the rooms. But knowing the group that owns it and having stayed in another one of their hotel I would assume it is excellent! I have entered most as "average" as I did not experience the hotel as a paying...
