The Curse Of The Lemony Blyton

Advantages: Clear, precise writing, lots of educational and amusing asides.
Disadvantages: Horrendously mercenary, hopelessly derivative.

. With the aid of the kindly Justice Strauss, Violet the boffin with a talent for inventing gadgets and Klaus the clever bookworm must find and foil the Count's evil plan? Ack. I very much wanted to love The Bad Beginning, but I did not. It is the first in a series of gothic adventure books for children written by a shadowy figure known as Lemony Snicket. Lemony Snicket has spent years researching the fortunes of the Baudelaire children and it his "sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales". Lemony Snicket is the alter ego of Daniel Handler, San Francisco novelist and I gather that Handler cites people like Roald Dahl and Edward Gorey as influences. Frankly, I find that hubristic. Yes, there is Dahlesque dark humour in Handler's book, but this is mostly affectation. The Bad Beginning is deeply derivative but it is not derivative of either Dahl ...

Review of The Bad Beginning - Lemony Snicket

I want to bathe in the lemony goodness!

Advantages: Strengthens your cuticles and nails
Disadvantages: Can smell like a cleaning product

In a bid to keep my hands perfectly smooth I decided that it wasn't just my hands that needed some tender loving care but also my nails! I'm fortunate enough to have a manicure twice a month - the good news is that it's free and done by my best friend who is a beautician and after many years of being her guinea pig whilst she was at college, this is her returning the favour! The first time she gave me a manicure she made a comment on my cuticles and how rough they looked, this was quite embarassing because as a woman you like to feel perfectly preened and I wasn't! Unfortunately due to having horses your hands can end up looking quite mistreated due to the nature of the animal and the jobs involved! Knowing my Lush products I knew exactly what product to use (it is quite sad how I know so much about Lush)! The very lovely Lemony Flutter ...

Bitter Lemony

Advantages: Fantastic performances, wonderful style, deliciously dark
Disadvantages: Some plot strands have been excised

After their parents are killed in a mysterious fire, the three Baudelaire orphans are packed off to live with their dastardly uncle, Count Olaf, who is determined to get his hands on their inheritance, no matter what it takes. The resourceful trio use their considerable talents (Violet is an inventor, Klaus is a bookworm with a photographic memory and Sunny can bite through almost anything) to stay alive. They manage to get away from the egomaniacal actor on more than one occasion. But Olaf has all manner of tricks up his sleeve? Unless you?ve been living in a very remote part of the world over the past couple of years, you?ve probably heard of Lemony Snicket. For the uninitiated, ?Lemony Snicket? has been one of the biggest children?s publishing phenomena of the new millennium. Writer Daniel Handler has so far produced thirteen books ...
