The main reason for choosing this hotel was because of the price. In early January 2008, I paid £87 for 2 nights bed and breakfast, for 2 in a double room- BARGAIN! But, do not stay here if you do not like climbing stairs.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The building itself from the outside, is OK.. It's quite a pretty, typical dutch canal house. When I first pulled up in the taxi, I was a little disappointed because the canal it is situated on is not the prettiest, and there is a great big office building directly opposite the hotel. So not a great view. The reception area was clean, and the staff very laid back and friendly. It also hs a computer with free internet.
THE ROOM: After you have exchanged your passport for your room key.. if you are on any of the upper floors, you have to leave the reception, go back outside, turn left , go to another entrance and open the second door! You are then confonted by a very steep stair case. A bit scary as you have to carry your luggage up- don't look down! Once you have finally reached your room, it is pretty standard. We stayed in room 209... It had a TV, large & comfortable double bed, side tables, wardrobe and shower room/ toilet (which was clean). The room was small, basic and quite bare... You couldn't open the window and so it got quite hot (the fan provided did not work).. BUT, it was OK. It was comfortable and clean and that's what is most important to me.
BREAKFAST: This is served between 7am and 10am. The first day, we had a bit of a lie-in and didn't get downstairs until 9:50... The woman in the breakfast room seemed a bit stroppy that we had got there so late, and just before 10am she actually locked the door so no-one else could get in, much to our surprise at one minute past ten when we tried to leave and found we were trapped! So not a nice relaxing breakfast that morning. The food was a selection of ceral, fruit salad (tinned), cold meat, scrambled egg and the usual drinks. There was a toastie maker there as well as a toaster. I believe that if you ask the staff in the breakfast room, they will make you a fry-up. Not the best breakfast I've ever had.... but OK I suppose.
THE LOCATION: The hotel is quite far out from everything (but just around the corner from the Heineken museum). If you enjoy exploring on foot and don't mind walking, then it is actually a very nice walk into the centre. You literally cross the street, and walk straight! If you have a map, it is so easy to get everywhere on foot in Amsterdam. The hotel is also very close to tram number 4, which takes you into town. Or it is not far from a taxi rank (again walking straight you will come across it)... or the hotel will happily call a taxi, which gets to you in about 5 minutes. I personally loved walking from the hotel into town every day... you go past some lovely restaurants that you would perhaps never see.
OVERALL: A very basic hotel, which I think attracts mostly those on a budget and stag party groups. Comfortable, clean, basic, a good places to stay if you are only looking for a place to crash at night. It does look like it needs a bit of plastering in places, and a touch of paint etc... but overall, not bad!!
