My wife and i recently had the pleasure of being able to get away from it all, with a short break in Paris. I am hoping that this might be of use to you guys, because we were doin Paris on a budget. We do not have a fortune, yet we wanted to fully enjoy and appreciate paris.
Known for being one of the most expensive cities in the world, Paris is culture capital of the world. There really is something for everything. I future reviews i will let you in on a few secret delights, that are both enjoyable, and inexpensive. But for now, i will concentrate on the hotel.
As we were working within a budget for the holiday, we wanted to try and get a relatively cheap hotel, though we did not want a real dump. Our viewpoint was that we needed a room that was clean and tidy, even if it did not have all the mod-cons. After all, this was our first time in Paris, and we did not really intend on being in the room that much. Just to sleep to recharge our batteries, ready for a new days exploring.
After researching long and hard, we settled upon the Londres and Anvers hotel, which is in the Monmartre region of Paris. Now, this area is also very close to what is known as the Parisien red light district, so first thing first, this hotel may not be the most suitable for families. However the hotel itself is very well located, as it is literally two minutes walk from the Gard du Nord, which is one of the largest train stations in the city. We were able to get a train from Charles de Gaulle, to the Gard du Nord for very little, and the hotel was in sight of the main entrance to the station. This was good for us, as we did not really have a clue where we were going at this stage. Later it transpired to be a godsend, as we were able to hop on a train to wherever we wanted to go very easily, and with as little hassle as possible in such a busy capital.
First impressions of the hotel, were that it was fresh and funky. The eating area is visable from the reception, and it was very modern. I would say it was perhaps basic, but looked really good. After all we were paying very little, so we did not expect a lot. I was pleasantly surprised. We went to the desk, and i was a bit nervous, as i had not spoken french in about 14 years. But i need not have worried as the lady on the desk spoke pefect English. It transpired, through conversation that she was born in Germany, and studied French at Oxford!!! She was incredably pleasant, and is a real credit to the hotel. As indeed are all the staff. You would not have a problem with any of them.
We got our keys, and went up to the room. We were up the top, but there was a lovely looking old fashioned lift which took us up. We opened the door, and went in. The room was small, but i have been told that this is a common thing in Parisien hotlels, such is the price of the rent. The room, like downstairs was fresh, funky and modern. It was clean and tidy, with the usual toiletries laid out in the en suite bathroom. There was no bath, but a power shower, a hairdryer and all the basics. There was no tea and coffee making facilities. There was a tv, but really that was no good to us as it was all greek to me (well, French actually.)!
We did not take food in the hotel, as we were trying to save the pennies. But there were more than enough cafe's about at reasonable prices. However, on talking to other guests, the food was reasonable, and good. So, from our well located hotel, we got ready and went out to explore the capital .......... To be continued!
The hotel Londres & anvers was a great budget hotel, close to all transport links, and very close to the moulin rouge, and the sacre couer. An excellent quaitity, budget hotel, with staff that are a real credit. I personnaly think that it is under-rated at the two stars it currently holds. We paid around £160 pounds for three nights, booked through hotels. com. I believe that the prices have gone up a bit, but the website quotes around £63 a night. Still a real bargain. You could do a lot worse than stay here, especially if you are a young couple. Maybe not so much if you are taking the kids.
