As anyone who has read my early reviews knows- I love Italy! I've been going there now for the past ten years with my parents, and for the first time last year I made my own way there with the boyfriend for a nice Italian holiday. The Grand Hotel Excelsior was my residence for numerous weeks holiday, and it certainly not one for the faint hearted! In the Thompson guide book it is described as 'quaint' which to put it politely is rather an understatement. One thing that can be said for it is it is completely oozing with Italian charm.
ARRIVAL/ LOCATION
If you book with Thompson as we did (though other tour operators go to the same location) flights go from Manchester Airport on a Friday morning, taking just over 2 and a half hours to get to Naples International Airport. From Naples the coastal resort of Amalfi is approximately ...
Advantages: Breathtakingly beautiful. Disadvantages: The road is not one for the feint of heart
that are located precariously above the sea on the mountains.
Every turn you make on the meandering coastal road brings you to another lovely little village - Positano, Sorrento, Ravello or Amalfi itself.
The largest resort on the coastline is Amalfi. Amalfi lies within the steep Valle dei Mulini - and is a historic town that has some wonderful buildings .
Towards the sea there is the port, bus terminus and a selection of cafes and restaurants. To the west edge of town on the hillside is an old Cappuchin convent, that is now the Hotel Cappuccini Convento - reached by a lift of green girders - you will see many such lifts around the coast.
Above Amalfi high in the hills is the beautiful Ravello, hovering 1000 ft on the steep cliff. At Ravello are two incredible villas - Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone - you need to book to go ...
Advantages: The view! Worth a million pounds, but you get it at a reasonable price Disadvantages: Some find rather old fashioned, but it has a certain charm
THE HOTEL ITSELF
From the outside the building may actually look rather ugly, or so I thought. This steams from the fact that the Hotel La Bussola was once a mill and pasta factory, a fact I find which further adds to its charms. The building is one of great character; for centuries the building has been used, and it has stories to tell of Southern Italian culture. On the main coast road leading to Amalfi the hotel has pride of place along the seafront. Sitting on top of a cliff face means optimum views are afforded, and every room offers stunning sea views.
I last visited the Hotel La Bussola in 2005 and it was just as good as I remembered it from the previous year. We booked two standard double bedrooms, which were a million miles away from standard. The beds were comfy and in large airy rooms , air condition actually worked ...
