The Hotel Maison Doree (2*) in central Tunis is one of many hotels at the lower end of the price scale. We stayed for 3 nights in Feb 2007 & the price for a double room, bed & breakfast, with ensuite bath/shower/loo worked out at around £19 per night. It's traditional French colonial style, the rooms are a decent size with high ceilings, old-fashioned dark wood furniture, and nicely shuttered windows. Lovely Tunisian-style tiled walls in corridors ... ...no loo even cheaper.
Staff speak good English (although a smattering of French will get you a long way in Tunisia), and are very helpful.
Drinking alcohol in Tunis isn't easy - many of the cheaper hotels don't serve alcohol, but the Maison Doree has a small TV lounge and attached bar.
It's ideally placed just off the Place Barcelone where the main train station is, with the bus station and the metro line ... more

It's ideally placed just off the Place Barcelone where the main train station is, with the bus station and the metro line to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said & the beach about 10mins walk down the main road.
Don't expect modern luxury for this price, but it's clean, friendly, ideally placed, and has enough space to relax in. If you're looking for somewhere to stay for the first or last couple of nights of your holiday, and hate the thought of ruining your holiday by picking a nasty city centre dive, it's ideal!
