Our travel agent chose The Manhattan for us for several reasons. It's very conveniently located in Sukhumvit, the business and one of the main tourist areas of Bangkok. It's cheap, we paid about £13 per night (December 2000) for a spacious double room with en-suite facilities, telly, phone, fridge, and all the usual comforts, plus a good buffet breakfast. However, a tip I learned is that if you book through a Thai travel agent, you can get a fair sized discount on the "walk-in" rates. I always do it this way now but, as my favourite Thai travel agent is a relative, even though they are very reliable, I'd maybe better not mention their name right now.
The breakfast is so-called American but more like British really, plus there are Japanese and Korean options. Mmmmm! Kimchi. The staff are pleasant and helpful and the place is clean.
On the down side, some of the furnishings are getting a bit shabby and whilst the breakfast is good the other food is mediocre. Oh yes, and one time I got a room where you had to climb over the toilet before you could shut the loo door. Nothing to worry about really.
There are so many good, cheap hotels in Bangkok that there is never any need to put up with anything you don't like. Just go elsewhere. I've been back to The Manhattan three times now and plan to stay there again next time. If you're looking for a medium priced hotel, you could do a lot worse than this one.
Update: Oops, I forgot to mention before that The Manhattan, is just inside Soi 15, Sukhumvit Road.
