Of the cheaper hotels listed, Hotel Strasser appeared to have the most convenient location just minutes from the train station and only a short walk or a tram ride.to the historic centre of Graz. We were even able to check room availability using the terminal and though Strasser is not one of them, it is possible to reserve rooms via this system if you wish to be certain the room will still be available when you arrive at the hotel.
The distance of the hotel from the station was even smaller than we had expected and we did, for just a moment, wonder if we were doing the right thing; after all hotels by stations often have bad reputations and can be of a low standard. Advantages: The location Disadvantages: The single casual visitor is likely to get a rough deal
This hotel is officially ranked as four star, not two star, but I have to say my experience was closer to two star than four star.
First impressions were good with the reception staff being friendly and helpful but the room was a big let down. The door was difficult to open and close, and inside I found a small basic room with no mini bar, no shaving socket and, more seriously, no room safe. I was promised a king sized bed but got a not very comfortable single bed shoved up against the wall. At least the room was non-smoking and didn't smell. A small TV was provided with several satellite channels but BBC news was not included - the only English speaking channel was CNN. The room also had the disadvantage of being located opposite the hotel kitchen which meant I was subjected to noise from the staff first thing in the morning ...
