Accommodation: There are a large number of hotels and guesthouses in Graz, with Graz Tourism offering online bookings, a service which I have taken advantage of and which worked perfectly well when booking a hotel for my parents and me - the prices are reasonable, and there are hotels to suit all budgets, although most of the cheaper hotels are found a little way from the centre of town, but usually with a good public transport connection.
Near to Graz: If you have a car and are going to use Graz as a base, then you have a lot more freedom. If you want to break your journey on the way down from Vienna, I would recommend a short stop in Hartberg – a pretty small town. Near Graz...

Advantages: The location Disadvantages: The single casual visitor is likely to get a rough deal
...This hotel is officially ranked as four star, not two star, but I have to say my experience was closer to two star than four star.
First impressions were good with the reception staff being friendly and helpful but the room was a big let down. The door was difficult to open and close, and inside I found a small basic room with no mini bar, no shaving socket and, more seriously, no room safe. If you don't mind travelling in to the city or you want to mix country and city, there are loads of people offering private accommodation on farms and in country villages.
Graz is a great place for foodies. Not only are there plenty of restaurants serving traditional Austrian fare but there are loads of international options too. Thanks to the high number of students you can also eat quite cheaply if that's what you want. A set lunch in a Weinstube costs around 6-7 Euro and for that you'll get soup, a salad and a main course; sometimes this also includes a dessert.
One thing to mention is that smoking is still allowed in public places in Austria...
