If you are ever considering a short break in Amsterdam I would highly recommend staying at Hotel MISC. My girlfriend and I stayed here in March for 4 nights and it was excellent!
It is a 2 star hotel but I prefer this to a number of 4/5 star hotels I have stayed in. It is very homely and the owners Rachel and Pepijn are very accomadating and friendly. It was my birthday on one of the days we were there and Pepijn put a bottle of lovely sparkling wine outside our door as a surprise!
When you book with hotel MISC they offer a taxi service that picks you up from Schipol airport and takes you to the hotel for 37.50EUR. This is a fixed price and cheaper than trying to get a taxi outside the airport. The taxi was an immaculate mercedes driven by a very friendly and helpful dutch guy.
The hotel is located next to the Nieumarkt square, faces a canal and is very central. On arrival it was quite hard to notice MISC, it blends in and is quite subtle. The outside is smart with the misc logo in the window. The building is a traditional narrow dutch canal house (2 windows wide) and very quirky! The entrance is very smart and modern, low chairs and a bar to the right, wooden floors and nice lighting.
Towards the back of the building is the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is stainless steel and very clean, the dining area comprises of 6 tables. They offer a complementory breakfast that is excellent! I would recommend the scrambled eggs! There is a selection of meats and cheeses, bacon, eggs, fresh bread and amazing homemade jams! Tea, coffee and juice! This really sets you up for the day and is served till 11.
The hotel has 6 twin/double rooms, all individually decorated and themed! The stairs are hidden behind a sliding door in the dining room on the ground floor and no lift! Its quite a hike and the stairs are narrow and steep but its worth it! We stayed in the Baroque room located on the 3rd floor (top). The room was small to medium sized with a big kingsize bed. It had a boutique feel and featured a fabric coveredwall, bed drapes and baroque style details. It had a satellite tv, a mini bar, fan, telephone & wifi, 2 chairs and tables, bedside tables and a large wardrobe. It also has a digital safe. The mini bar is COMPLEMENTORY! I have never stayed in a hotel with this! Non alcoholic but it has lots of nice juices and soft drinks. Other drinks can be ordered or bought from the bar. The view from the windows were of the inner gardens, other rooms face the canal.
The bathroom was fully tiled, clean and simple. No bath but a nice shower. The bathroom products were all really nice, organic and included shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, soap and a ear bud/cotton wool pack.
Other themed rooms are Design, Wonders, Rembrandt, Retro and Afrika.
The room was cosy, comfortable and had everything you need. The location of the hotel is in the centre of Amsterdam, close to the red-light district and dam square, 10 mins walk from centraal station. Prices range from 155EUR-215EUR per night per room depending on time of year.
We are planning on returning to Amsterdam later in the year and we will defintely be staying here! Hope you do too!
