Upon arriving inside at around midnight Majorcan time (+1 hour GMT), I was surprised to find nobody at the 24-hour front desk. In October 2006 I went on an all-inclusive holiday for one week to Porto Cristo on the east coast of Majorca (Mallorca). I stayed in a hotel called the Monte Verde. It cost me £169 and I will now share my experiences of this hotel with you.
The Monte Verde Hotel was built in 1969 and was fully refurbished during the winter of 2000. The Monte Verde has a total of 140 rooms that are built over 7 floors.
When I pulled up to The Monte Verde I was not very impressed with the look of the hotel, it looked like a block of flats and was similar to some of the housing around Porto Cristo, which looked a bit basic and old fashioned. However The Monte Verde is only a 2 star hotel so I was not expecting too much.
Upon arriving inside at around midnight Majorcan time (+1 hour GMT), I was surprised to find nobody at the 24-hour front desk. I looked around but the only people I could find were the other holidaymakers in the bar. After waiting around for about 10 minutes at the front desk, a member of staff finally arrived to check me in, however as I would find throughout my stay all but one of the employees (The Manager) at the Monte Verde spoke very little English and it was a struggle finding out information for the duration of my stay.
Having now checked in I made my own way to my room, which was on the 5th floor, which by the end of the week I realised was the best place to be as having spoken to various people on the lower floors, who complained of no sleep due to the noise from the bar on the ground floor. If you are unlucky enough to be in a room on the 1st or 2nd floor don't expect to get much sleep.
The view from the rooms is either overlooking the swimming pool or as I had over looking Porto Cristo with the Majorcan mountains in the background, its quite a nice view.
Now the holiday was all-inclusive, which ment all meals were provided by the hotel as part of the cost of the holiday. Now the food was pretty bad and to make it worse it was the same food everyday, the same choice of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It was a buffet style service and the choice was from toast, a variety of sausages (mostly German), chips, pasta, egg, beans, salad and bread rolls. There was also a variety of foreign foods without labels and I was unable to work out what these were so didn't try to many as the few I did try were awful. The desert though I was impressed with I loved the trifle and the lemon sourbet ice cream. I ended up eating out after a few days as the food at the hotel was so bad, which obviously added to the cost of the holiday.
Now a good thing about the hotel was the cleanliness, I can have no complaints about that as my room was cleaned daily as was the whole of the hotel. The cleaning team there were great, they spoke very little English but did their job fantastically as the hotel was always very clean.
The Hotel is situated close to the Caves of Drach, approximately 200 metres away and if you're ever in Porto Cristo I recommend you take the tour of the caves, as it really is a wonderful sight.
Hotel Statistics:
Airport - 60 km away and will cost around £50 or 75 Euros by taxi to get to the hotel
Beach - 800 metres away and you have to walk through an area of the locals, which live in a poor standard of housing.
Shops - The shops are located near the beach and there is a wide variety of shops.
Hotel Facilities:
Disabled Access - The disabled access to the hotel is good with many ramps and lifts
Laundry or Laundry Service - I never used this so can't comment on it
Sauna - Well the sauna is a joke it's only aloud to be used a few hours a day and because of this it is extremely busy and you will be lucky to get in it
Swimming Pool - well its kind of small but very clean, possibly to clean as I think they put way to much chlorine in it as it smelled very strongly, but at least it was clean
Gym - The gym consists of a weights bench and a running machine, but as with the sauna is only open at certain times and is always busy
Tennis court - The tennis courts are ok if you can find a member of staff to provide the equipment
Mini golf - Now thw mini golf area is just a joke, totally unusable, it's a complete state and out of use while I was there
Bar - The bar is ok nice and clean and as our holiday was all-inclusive all drinks were free. Also entertainment in the bar like bingo and live singers but it wasn't great
Restaurant - awful food, would never eat there again
Money exchange - I never used this facility
Parking - There were a few parking spaces available so if your driving whilst there you should be ok
Room Facilities:
Room Size - The size of our room was about 10 ft by 15 ft
Balcony - Every room had a balcony, which was nice
bath and shower - Very clean and Useable, I can't fault the cleaning staff
Telephone - I only used it a few times and worked ok
Safety deposit box - Not much I can say about this, did its job
General comments:
Employees - Speak very little English and are not very helpful at all, they were bossy and strict also, the only employees that impressed me were the cleaners
Cleanliness - Very good, can't fault the cleanliness
Noise Levels - Very noisy in the bar area all day long till around 3 or 4am and awful if your on the lower floors trying to sleep
Atmosphere - Its ok the other holidaymakers were all very friendly but it was the employees that ruined it.
So to sum up it was clean but apart from that I was disappointed with every aspect of the hotel and would definitely not go back or recommend anyone to stay there.
