It’s strange how certain foods bring back memories there is a cheese called Neufchattel that brings back memories to me. About 28 yrs ago we had little money we lived in an old house that we rented those three years were traumatic to us our first baby died, we had another healthy baby, We were involved in a serious car crash that still has an effect on my vision and me. We lived inn a village so few shops but there was a delicatessen that sold good cheeses and meats. One of our treats was Neufchatel cheese. When we wanted to treat ourselves we would buy some and sit round the open fire (we collected fallen down wood from the hillside with our barrow our baby would ride in the wheel barrow). We sometimes had a bottle of wine with our cheese and biscuits, but we did not drink so much wine in those days could not afford it, (newly married, young baby, husband just started his career as a teacher, so low pay, me not working.) Anyway we would sit together around the fire listening to music records, (before the days of cd’s) Yes, pink Floyd, Led zeppelin, Captain Beef heart, Caravan. A warm cosy together feeling a romantic evening together (Sally rarely disturbed us she was a v good baby slept from 7.30pm – 7 in the morning) We would eat Neufchatel with either a cream cracker or a water biscuit. Neufchatel is a French soft cheese.
Imagine the green meadows in Normandy, cows grazing gaily on the lush green grass. The cheese Neufchatel is produced in a small town in northern Normandy called Neufchatel en Bray. It is one of the oldest cheeses produced in this area its creation dating back to 10 35. The cheese is a soft white cows cheese, a light tangy taste, mushroom and slightly acidic. This cheese has a white crust around it. This cheese is best eaten when ripe and slightly runny. This cheese sadly is 45 % fat; when we ate lots of it we were young and not so conscious of the fat we consumed. This cheese is available in different shapes and sizes the traditional shape is a heart and looks good in the centre of a cheese board. I have bought this cheese in supermarkets and delicatessen shops but cannot find the price when next I buy some I will tell you. In fact I fancy a romantic evening in so maybe next time I see this cheese I will buy some, see if we can recapture the romance we felt then , not sure I really want to relive that time again though as times were hard
