Advantages: Those Public Rooms
Disadvantages: Standard Rooms small, but hay that was our choice and your all the same at breakfast

We have just returned from a Week-end in Porto. We were looking for a Hotel that had good location and some olde world charm, so this one seemed to tick the boxes. We booked it thru Octopustravel.com for £165 that being for a Double Room with Buffet Breakfast for three nights (About £27 per person per night B&B). Getting to the Hotel from the Airport can not be easier. You get the Metro from the Airport, you can not get on the wrong one as that is the start of the line, no changes necessary just stay on unti the BOLHAO stop (approx 25 mins) cost 1 Euro 85 Cents (purchase ticket from Tourist Info Booth in arrival hall, or if braver from the Ticket Machines in the Metro (Do have an English Button) for instructions. Well-earned stars

Advantages: Near to town amenities
Disadvantages: Cobbled street outside

I stayed here when it opened, so it was very quiet. If it gets included in the holiday brochures, I can't imagine it being too quiet for too often. Most tourist hotels are built near the Lido complex at the North side of Funchal. The Porto Santa Maria is at the opposite end of town, right at the border between the 'old' town and the rest of Funchal. It's only a short walk from the hotel to the cable car and the town centre shops (although this is over cobbles, so beware if you need a wheelchair or if you have difficulty walking), and there are plenty of restaurants around. The hotel itself is spotless, the rooms are well air-conditioned, with access to balconies or terraces - everything you would expect from a four-star hotel on this island. Review of Porto Santa Maria Hotel, Funchal

Hotel in quiet yet accessible area.

Advantages: Easy access to all activities and public transport.
Disadvantages: Probably quite expensive!

This is a beautiful hotel situated right at the end of the main promanade in Funchal. The views across the ocean, and into the city are perfect, with the sun setting over golden cliffs to the west in the evening towards the harbour. The hotel is situated right by the cable car and taxi rank, with the city centre on your door step, yet it is not a busy area, with very little noise. I have sat by the hotel reading a book in the shade many a time, enjoying the sound of the ocena and not much more. I attended a party at this hotel, a wedding, and it really is outstanding inside, although unfortunately, I didnt get a chance to see any of the rooms.
