Advantages: Friendly staff and a great restaurant Disadvantages: Rooms are generally basic and the beds are too soft for me
Hilversum is a funny sort of place. It's only about a half hour train ride from Amsterdam but unless you own a very old radio and have studied the front panel very carefully, it's not the sort of place that people tend to have heard of. It briefly hit the headlines a few years ago when the leader of a right-wing Dutch political party with rather unsavoury views on immigration was gunned down in the city. Other than that, it's not well known unless you have connections to Nike or media companies like Endemol, the people we have to blame for Big Brother.
My connections were more mundane. For almost six years I worked for a company with its European head office in Hilversum and I stayed many times at the Lapershoek, sometimes as often as two or three times a month. I've known this hotel in bad times and good - the bad times mostly ...
Advantages: Authentic recording, a direct link to the composer of this beautiful music, very expressive and stylish. Disadvantages: A different style with some small technical discrepences, some might prefer a more modern recording.

They strongly emphasise the idea of strictness, lack of any kind of exaggeration, expression or imitation of past traditions, as though the piece is like an object to be guarded. However "Masters of the Piano Roil..." is primary evidence that flatly contradicts what they say - there are over 250 recordings of Ravel playing his own work (some of the best featured ...
Advantages: Like a great boutique shop that you feel "special" in Disadvantages: perhaps buying items for special treats once a month?
I only found a Ravel shop because I was on a training course and liked a colleagues handbag. I walked in and thought "Wow" If only I worked here I would be in heaven 24/7. I ended up walking out with 2 handbags and nearly a pair of shoes but remembered I do need to pay the mortgage! The staff were very friendly and didnt look down on you just because your wearing jeans and trainers. I brought 1 evening bag and 1 day bag, both unique and quality oozing from them. The shop was very clean, laid out well, and lovely shoes which I am going to go back to next month! I am going to plan to buy future gifts from here for family and friends. ...
