This is probably my favourite hotel out of any I have ever stayed in. I cannot wait to return. The staff are the best I have encountered in a hotel and the rooms are stunning. I stayed here when my Dad treated us to a family break last summer. He paid around £350 for 4 nights bed and breakfast for 4 adults. It is a 3 star hotel, but I can honestly say I have stayed in 5* hotel wth far inferior service. It has about 25 rooms (spead over - I think - 4 floors), each unique, wonderfully maintained and beautifully decorated.
I shared a room with my sister which was quite simply gorgeous. The furniture was very pretty and was a mixture of antiques and modern. The room had a tv, kettle, hairdryer and mini bar. The bathroom was immaculate with plenty of room and was well-lit. Our room had a small stone balcony (which looked very "Romeo and Juliet"!) with views of the Eiffel Tower which was a huge bonus we weren't expecting. I would definitely recommend requesting a room with a balcony if you go. My parents didn't have one so came to sit out on ours most evenings! The hotel has a carpark 200 metres from the hotel, but we didn't use this.
There is a breakfast room (with a small outside eating area for the warmer months) on the ground floor. Although we visited the hotel in July, and the
breakfast room is quite small, it was never crowded when we were there. Breakfast is continental and fairly simple, but all the food is extremely fresh and the serving staff are lovely. There is the usual spread of breads, cheeses, fruit, cereals, eggs, juices and hot drinks.
The hotel has a small bar by reception but does not serve food except at breakfast. We drank at the bar a couple of times, and although the prices were hotel-high, the staff were so friendly and informative, it was a pleasure to drink there. There are a couple of small lifts in the hotel but unless you have mobility difficulties, you will only really need them when you are carrying luggage as the stairs are well worth taking to have a nose round other parts of the hotel. There are beautiful stained glass windows on some floors and lots of paintings and antique furniture scattered about in the public areas.
The immediate area is mainly residential although there are plenty of general stores, (rather posh) restaurants, cafes and bars within a 5 minute walk. There is a general store selling drinks, snacks, cigarettes etc nextdoor to the hotel and it is run by an extremely friendly Tunisian man who taught us new French phrases every time we went in! The apartments in the area are absolutely fantastic. The apartment building opposite the hotel is incredible and I must admit I enjoyed peering across the street into the homes of the sort of people who keep enormous, ornate antique harps in their sitting rooms!
The location of the hotel is fantastic. It is a short stroll from the enormous Bois de Boulogne park, a 15 minute walk from L'Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Elysees. The Porte Maillot Metro station is a 5-10 minute walk and as anyone who has been to Paris will know, the Metro is an incredibly quick, cheap and efficient way of travelling around. We never waited more than 2 minutes for a train. It was my first extended trip to Paris and I got very touristy and excited whenever we were on one of the overland railway lines which passed alongside the Eiffel Tower. The many accordian players wandering along the carriages may irritate some but I personally loved them! An accordian player standing next to you while you travel past the Eiffel Tower on the Metro in one of the world's most beautiful cities.....come on!
The hotel staff speak impeccable English but really appreciate it if you learn some basic French phrases (just greetings, basic conversation etc). I got by pretty well on my GCSE level French and those who serve you in restaurants, cafes, shops etc really are appreciative. I noticed in many touristy cafes that the staff would talk to you in rapid French at first, even knowing that you are English. If you reply in French, no matter how basic, they are happy to then chat in fluent English to you. I got the impression that some were fed up of foreign tourists who make no effort to learn even basic French so if you show you're not entirely clueless, they will love you for it. We were in one cafe at a table next to an extended family of British tourists who were complaining loudly about the food, prices and Paris generally. Their waiter spoke only French to them and they got more and more annoyed that he couldn't understand them so resorted to pointing at things on the menu and holding up fingers to signify the quantity of each item they wanted. He then came over to our table and after we had a short conversation conducted in french with him, he switched to fluent English, much to our amusement and the irritation of those next to us!
We had only 3 full days in Paris, which really is not long enough to see everything you want. We spent a lot of time wandering along the banks of the Seine, which was beautiful in the July sun. I highly recommend taking one of the many boat trips (prices vary a lot, depending on which one oyu take and what is included - most have a commentary in several languages). We took a boat trip at night and the the lighting on the buildings and fairy lights on the trees along the river look lovely. Parts of the river are lined with small stalls selling items such as music memorabilia, books, antiques and art work, often at reasonable prices. We also visited Montmartre which is a must. The views from the top of the hotel are stunning and the area is just beautiful with all its artists and cafes. I can also recommend the Père-Lachaise Cemetry. I was a bit reluctant to go as I thought I would feel a bit uncomfortable gawping at graves but it really is a beautiful place. We mainly went to see Jim Morrison's grave which, although it has been cleaned up in recent years, is still decorated with an assortment of red roses, beer bottles and spliffs! You can also find the graves of Maria Callas, Chopin, Oscar Wilde and hundreds of other famous people here. I found people generally were very respectful of their surroundings while we we there and I would have been upset if it was otherwise.
I also recommend a visit to the Tour Montparnasse, the tallest building in France. The views from the terrace on the 59th floor are out of this world. You can stand there for hours picking out famous landmarks on the distance and you can take some incredible photographs. The information centre is fascinating, particularly the historic photographs of Paris.
I will be writing a separate review of Paris, so this really is intended as a review of the Residence Foch with just a few of my experiences of Paris as a whole. To sum up, I had a fantastic time in Paris and at the Residence Foch specifically. I can highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Paris who wants individual and quiet accomodation within easy reach of the Metro system. I will DEFINITELY be staying here with my boyfriend next time I go to Paris.
