...and in its spirit. Trieste has the relaxed atmosphere of somewhere like Vienna, rather than the hustle and bustle of Rome or Naples.
Arriving at Trieste's central bus or train stations, the first thing you notice is a kind of faded grandeur. While it is a city of striking buildings it is essentially down at heel and, in the main, neglected. The sad sight of the now almost ruined dock buildings is testamant to the fact that in contrast to former times, Trieste is in some respects now surplus to requirements. The Habsburgs developed Trieste as their empire's southern port as it was the most northerly place to land cargoes from the Meditteranean. However, after the First World War Italy absorbed Trieste into its terrritory and had other, bigger and more conveniently situated ports to use instead.

Advantages: Perfect location, excellent Hotel if you just want somewhere to sleep Disadvantages: A little hard to find, nothing really major though, Breakfast could have been more substantial
...Having decided over Christmas that I fancied a trip to Barcelona again I got onto the Ryanair website and started booking up. I had a couple of choices around the Station and dotted over the city but decided that Roma Reial fitted the bill better than any of the others.
It's located just off Las Ramblas, the main street in Barcelona where a lot of the cities drinking establishments are located. The Roma Reial is located in the Placa Reial about 200 meters from...

...Theatre. It is so easy to get to all of Rome's major attractions and the surrounding areas on foot or using the underground or bus from this base.
Fantastically this hotel is located just next to the Republica Square and just 5 minutes walking distance from the central railway station in Rome (Termini) and Via Nazionale (one of the main shopping streets). Also a plus is that it is just 15 minutes walking distance from the Colosseum and Venice Square.
TIP - The gladiators outside the Colosseum who offer to take a photo on your camera, charge 10 euros each just for this priviledge !!!
Even to the Vatican and Sistine Chapel it only took about 50mins walking . Most of the other sights like the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps were only about a 20-25 mins walk.
TIP - The Chapel only opens certain times of the day so i would check opening...
