The perfect place

Advantages: It's got all you need and more
Disadvantages: nightlife not as active as you might want

(again, with all the major internatinal food outlets). Around the streets of the town there are plenty of shops to choose from, these tend to be more pricey, however they do provide you with very good wuality clothing and different fashions. And if you compare these prices to Uk prices, thay are not that different. TOURISTY STUFF If you like history, you will love the city centre, it is filled with historical buildings, provided with plaques with information about them. The Praça da República is the main square in the city and it is also where the locals meet to chat and watch the world pass by. In the midly of the square is a 16th century fountain. Other in teresting buildings are the Sé Catedral (15th century), the Casa da Misericórdia (16th century), the castle, the church of S. Domingos, etc. The best you can do is go to ...

On the menu at the Hotel Da Vinci

Advantages: Shiny new hotel, modern and comfortable
Disadvantages: Not the most interesting town in Tuscany

The 4-star Hotel Da Vinci lies just on the other side of the River Arno from the town centre of Empoli. It's an easy walk from the hotel to all that the town has to offer, unfortunately that's not really an awful lot. On the plus side, it's an easy hotel to find - exit the superstrada 67 (or FI-PI-LI, Firenze-Pisa-Livorno) at either the Empoli east or west junction, follow the by-pass to the bridge, and turn right (or left) for Vinci. In case those instructions are too hard to follow, it's signposted all the way from the SS67 exit. Hotel Da Vinci is ideally situated for visiting some of the major attractions of Tuscany, being a 20-minute drive from Florence, 5 minutes further from Pisa, and around an hour from Sienna. Empoli has rail links with both Florence and Pisa. The hotel is a silver-grey shining, ultra-modern edifice ...

Casa del Balam Hotel, Merida

Advantages: A unique and quaint hotel...
Disadvantages: Lacking a few mod-cons...

We stayed in this hotel for a few days while on a little tour of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, including visits to Cancun (don't bother), Playa del Carmen & Cozumel (much better) and the amazing ancient Mayan ruins at Uxmal, Chitzen Itza and Tulum. (I'll try and get round to reviewing all these later...) We arrived by taxi from Merida airport (a short journey), having flown in from Cancun, where we had arrived in Mexico the day before, and were delighed with what we found, a massive improvement of the brash touristy-ness of Cancun ! The Casa del Balam Hotel was formerly the family home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Mexican tourism. A blend of Mexican tiles, terracotta and wrought iron, it has a small pool in a walled courtyand, complete with a stone carved fountain and tropical plants, a restaurant and bar, along ...
