Hotel Salò du Parc, Salò

Advantages: Well, you could say you've seen it.
Disadvantages: Too many to list this is a phenomenally bad movie.

...When I first heard that Salo had been passed uncut in the UK I was like "Oh Wow!" this was shortly followed by the realisation that I never had a clue about any aspect of it. What I knew was that it was one of those films that old men seemed fascinated with. I also knew it was banned but I never knew what it was about. The film is based on the novel Salo by the Marquis De Sade; any of you familiar with this sick little monkeys work is already aware that we are slipping down a very mucky slope. Director Pier Paolo Pasolini decided to bring the novel a little more up to date by transporting it to Italy during the Second World War. A group of high ranking officers visit a small town; they take 18 promising youngsters and whisk them away to a fortress in the hills; they are told an experience like no other, and it's an experience... ...Mika Salo was an able replacement for Michael Schumacher following the German’s horrific crash as Silverstone, as he picked up 10 points from six races to lend valuable support to Eddie Irvine’s title charge. Salo began the 1999 season as a test driver for BAR Supertec but drove in three races as cover injured Ricardo Zonta. His stand-in performances for Ferrari persuaded Peter Sauber to pursue his signature and take the seat of veteran Jean Alesi for his seventh year of Formula One. Advantages: Beautifully filmed, poetic, magnificently acted masterpiece of cinema rarely matched today
Disadvantages: Nothing... genuinely nothing

...I first saw Hotel du Nord as part of a double bill with a film by Jean Renoir (I forget which - though I think the brilliant Le Crime De Monsieur Lange) and I was frankly going to see the Renoir film and thought, hmmm, I'll just have to sit through Hotel du Nord and grin and bear it. Something about the film just really didn't appeal. Then right from the opening shot that tracks down from the bridge over the canal Saint Martin and along the side of the canal to where the two lovers, played by Annabella and Jean-Pierre Aumont, settle against one another on a bench, despairing and apparently doomed I simply didn't look back. I couldn't. Since that Sunday afternoon I have always had something of a soft spot for Hotel du Nord. It is firmly placed in the traditional of French cinema of the thirties.
