Hotel Torre di Cala Piccola, Porto Santo Stefano

Advantages: Service, cleanliness, ambience, views, value for money
Disadvantages: None but not suitable for young families or clubbers!

...First of all, a word to the warning for anyone who enjoys the Magaluf/Palma Nova style holiday experience - the Hotel Felip and the resort of Porto Cristo are not for you! I say resort but in fact, Porto Cristo is a small coastal town built on the fishing industry and now boasts a very busy marina for private boat owners in addition to the still substantial fishing fleet. The town is on the east coast of Mallorca, about 62 kms (55 minutes) from Palma by car. Porto Cristo is probably most famous for the popular and stunning Caves of Drach which hosts day trip coach loads from all parts of the island, on a daily basis. The small town centre has a few tourist shops and cafe/restaurants together with local bars but no large clubs and you're very unlikely to spot a lager lout here! ...We stayed at the Perros hotel in September (2000)this was our second visit to Aghios Stefanos a quiet little town situated at the northwest of the Island,it has quite a few bars all welcoming and the majority serve good reasonably priced snacks and meals. The beach is clean and the water crystal clear and safe for swimming for all the family. The sporty ones can partake in the jet sking and paragliding facility's available, this is a good little resort to base yourselves, Coach excurtions are available from the resort to various destinations on the Island and the local car hire is very well priced,I found it cheaper than pre-booking it with the travel agent. The accomadation at the Perros hotel was excellent with very clean spacious rooms and self catering facilities if needed, but visit the restaraunt first the menu is cheap... Read review

Advantages: Very stylish, surprisingly cheap

...The last time I stayed in a hotel in small-town Portugal was nearly 20 years ago in the out-of-the-way north-eastern town of Braganca. It was a tiny hotel with a room so small you had to walk over the bed to get to the window and every evening the restaurant would fill up with men in blue overalls, drinking the local hooch, smoking cigarettes out of the corner of their mouths and waiting to see the latest Brazilian soap operas on the TV that was constantly on in the corner of the room. I loved it - the atmosphere, not the men in the overalls! So that was the image I had in my mind when I set off to Santo Tirso with a booking for the Hotel Cidnay. It was going to cost me around Euro70 for the night so I was expecting something pretty basic. I certainly didn't expect a stylish chic hotel that looked like it was straight out of the pages...
