The quality of a hotel can enhance a holiday or just as easily detract from its enjoyment. Often when choosing a hotel, we are guided by details in a holiday brochure or the information on the Internet only. For our trip to Prague, that is exactly the situation we found ourselves in. Prague has a plethora of hotels to choose from.
We spent quite some time scanning the hotels available on the net. We wanted somewhere near enough to the town center for convenience but far enough away to ensure a quiet night. And of course, the name had to be appealing!! We settled on the Tosca.
The blurb stated that the “Hotel Tosca Prague is conveniently situated inside Prague district in the quiet street near Wenceslas Place- the centre of Prague life - takes only 10 minute walk from here.”
The hotel offers an airport collection service. When we arrived at the airport, a taxi was waiting as promised. The
taxi also was transporting other visitors to their hotels at the same time. Four other couples in fact – each to a different hotel.
The journey to the hotel was a bit like the advert you see on the TV where the couple pass hotels of differing quality. As one couple after another was dropped off, our hearts were beginning to drop – some of the hotels looked pretty dire. Fortunately, when the taxi pulled up outside the Tosca, we were relieved to find a clean and pleasant façade, The hotel was indeed situated in a quiet street in the area called Královské Vinohrady (Royal Vineyards).
We entered the hotel, the hotel lobby opened out the incorporate a bar area to the left, the Juventus, and a seating are to the right with tables and chairs. The 24-hour manned reception desk was directly opposite the entrance. The receptionist was polite and friendly. We filled in the necessary forms to register and were given our rooms. At the reception area, postcards and some small souvenirs were displayed for sale and a collection of leaflets on attractions and concerts were available.
The hotel offers a choice of 27 rooms (22 double, 3 single, 1 apartment and one room suitable for the disabled) situated over five floors. Our room was on the fifth floor. A lift services the hotel but . . .
To get to the lift from the entrance floor, you either have to go up or down a flight of stairs first. Plus the lift only goes to the fourth floor so anyone on the fifth has to walk up a further flight of stairs. Not too bad in our situation but anyone who struggles with stairs would find it a problem.
The room itself consisted of the main bedroom, a bathroom and an entrance hall. Now as I said we were on the fifth floor and as a consequence, the roof sloped (see photo) just over the bed. Now of course, this had to be on my side of the bed!!! Meaning I had to stoop when getting up or be in danger of a sore head (and not from alcohol!).
The double bed was in fact two singles pushed together to make one each with its own separate duvet. The sheets were clean and the bed tidily made. It was also comfortable enough so long as you each stayed to your own side!!
Some rooms do have a bath and I did give my preference for this facility when booking. However due to the lateness of my booking, only a room with a shower was available. In saying that the shower was very spacious, a corner shower with a double door. The Bathroom was very clean and towels were provided – albeit basic small-sized, several-times-washed towels that had lost much of their freshness and fluffiness.
The room had the facilities of a Television, telephone and a mini-bar – no tea making facilities and the mini-bar was locked with no key available.
The hotel Tosca is 3 star hotel and costs 115 euros per room per night for a double room and 106 euros for a single. The cost includes a buffet breakfast. This was served just to the left of the lobby bar. Breakfast was always well stocked with a good selection of hot and cold foods and drinks. The service was excellent and the area always clean and tidy.
An evening meal is not available in the hotel but this is not a problem as there are so many restaurants surrounding the area.
It says that the hotel is only 10 minutes walk from the center but usually we were so tired at the end of each day that we did not manage to walk back! Luckily there is an excellent public transport service in Prague with a tram and a subway stop just a minute’s walk away in the beautiful Namesti Miru (Peace Square).
All things considered, I would recommend the hotel. Ok, it was not sumptuous or luxurious but the service was good and friendly. The bed or bathroom did not meet our ideal requirements but they were clean and tidy.
