Hotel Villa Maria, Sorrento

Advantages: Pool, friendly staff, value for money
Disadvantages: Rooms a little out-dated

...We visited Italy for our family holiday (parents and two grown-up kids) and stayed at the Villa Maria in Sorrento for a long weekend on a friend's recommendation. It has 80 rooms and offers B&B and half board accomodation (we opted for the former as there are so many lovely restaurants in Sorrento to investigate in the evening). Location: Its on the outskirts of central Sorrento, which means it is a short 5-10 minute walk to restaurants and the train station. Sorrento is itself in easy reach of sites such as Pompeii and Capri and Ischia although there is no beach at Sorrento itself (there are wooden pontoons which you can hire a sunbed on and swim off). Ambience: We found the staff to be friendly and the rooms adequate and clean, though they could do with updating the decor. The pool area is nice to spend some time in the sun... Read review

...is filled with tourist shops, gelateria and some more up market designer stores. Sorrento has two marinas. Marina Grande and Marina Piccola, conversely it is Piccola which is the larger of the two and is the departure point for the ferries that cross to Naples and the surrounding islands as well as the cruises along the Amalfi coast. Maria Grande is the smaller of the two and is home to a number of fishing and pleasure vessels and is well worth a visit. It has a small beach area and some nice sea food restaurants. Both marina can be reached by public transport or by walking however be warned Sorrento is a coastal town perched on the cliffs and while the walk down is pleasant the same cannot be said for the return journey. Advantages: Beautiful views, beautiful Hotel.
Disadvantages: 15 mins distance from center of Sorrento

...This Hotel is great! I stayed here a couple of years ago. The Hotel is in Sant'Agnello which is about 15 mins walk from Sorrento (Piazza Tasso) and there is a local bus service if you don't feel like walking. The Hotel is very clean, and the staff are friendly and very organised. The pool is also very nice and the dining room is fabulous with a view of the Bay of Naples. Very near to the Hotel there is a small beach, some local shops and a couple of restaurants too. It is better to go into Sorrento for bars in the evening although there are a couple of small bars in Sant'Agnello on the main street which is called Corso Italia (about 5 mins walk from the Hotel) On the main street there is a more frequent bus service into Sorrento (buses every 20 mins).
