Minimalist Art

Advantages: Central, cheap, artistic
Disadvantages: No facilities, rubbish breakfast

For some reason, I booked a week's holiday to Brussels. On my own. It should be stated straight away that I didn't have a great holiday, but I'll try not to let that influence my views of the hotel itself. The Comfort Hotel Art Siru (or the Siru as I'll refer to it from now on) is a strange beast. A few years ago, around 130 contemporary Belgian artists were commissioned to decorate each of the 101 rooms, to create the world's first 'Art Hotel'. Every room is decorated with unique and original paintings or sculptures, and it really is a lovely idea. The bizarre thing is that you'd expect this kind of innovation in some kind of high-end resort hotel. The sort of place that has huge suites where actors are interviewed about their latest film against the background of a new and daring work of art. The Siru, on the other hand, is ...

Sheraton Brussels sprouts high!

Advantages: A superb hotel for a bargain price via Priceline
Disadvantages: I can't think of any!

Mothering Sunday, 2004, was approaching and the 2½-year-old baby Josh nudged his proud father and suggested taking Amanda away for the weekend, which seemed like a great treat. Believe that if you will, but a bit of rather crafty pre-planning on my own part meant that I just happened to have a pair of cheap ?Eurostar? tickets to Brussels already sorted out and I pointed my web browser in the general direction of ?Priceline?, looking for a decent hotel. Not for the first time, I might add! It?s an exciting experience if, like me, you?re fairly cheeky. To cut a long story short, my offer of just £32 was accepted and we were allocated to the excellent ?Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Brussels? ? to give it its full title. I might add, in retrospect, that this was an absolute steal - just check out the rack-rate! Incidentally, Brussels ...

Review of Sheraton Brussels Hotel and Towers, Sint-Joost-ten-Node

Not exactly colonial

Advantages: Central, inexpensive.
Disadvantages: Poor service, stark rooms, no English cable tv.

The Hotel des Colonies is on a side street off of one of Brussells' main drags (not far from the Gare du Nord). It is right next to the huge Sheraton, and a few hundred yards from what seems to be the heart of the local sex trade (lots of places called 'Bar American'!). The brochure said it was recently refurbished. If 1970s is recent, then that is true. The rooms are functional, but the general hotel facilities are not. The bar is closed all weekend. the concierge had difficulty speaking the local language, let alone English. The street outside was rather grotty (not really their fault - road works). Booked a double (they do actually have double rooms) but got a twin. But... not too pricy, certainly compared with near neighbours. ...
