The Walter Arms is a local pub and restaurant just close to where I live. You can find it on Bearwood Road, between Barkham and Sindlesham on the outskirts of Wokingham. It has recently undergone a substantial refurbishment so when I visited recently I was interested to see if and how it had changed. It is now described as a pub and restaurant with a hint of the mediterranean!
The pub used to have quite a cluttered old fashioned feel to it but that has all changed now. When you first go in you notice a light, airy modern feel although they have still retained a real fire which on a cold February night was very welcoming. In January 2000 there was a BBC documentary broadcast which followed the lives of a handful of au pairs in various countries. Not meaning to be horrid, but most of them were appalling. The only one who looked like she was doing her best looking after the children, and trying to fit in to life in a new country was called Zoë. Perhaps it was as a sign.

As some of you know, I left France by the end of September to be an au pair in England. I must say that I was over excited by the idea of spending a school year in a country whose language has been a real passion for me for almost a decade !
I had decided to look for an au pair family on the internet, although some people had told me that there were agencies dealing with this kind of jobs. I had found two reasons (which I thought were good enough) not to use the services of an agency : first, the cost. By subscribing on the au pair website (which is not the home page of an agency) I had to pay £10 for a month.
