It's difficult to gauge what you should expect from a hotel in New York. I guess it is more or less on a par with London as far as "value for money" is concerned.

Advantages: Central Location Disadvantages: Pricey - not paticularly good value for money, rooms are tired and in need of a makeover

This hotel is in a fabulous location. A couple of minutes stroll to the Empire State Building which is directly infront of (and above) you as you step out of the front door. Also very close to Macy's and Times Square. In fact quite a central location as we walked easily from the hotel to Central ... ...even less so as the hotel was completely covered in scaffolding when we were there in October 2006, but there is a post office just a few yards from the hotel which comes in handy.

This hotel is in a fabulous location. A couple of minutes stroll to the Empire State Building which is directly infront of (and above) you as you step out of the front door. Also very close to Macy's and Times Square. In fact quite a central location as we walked easily from the hotel to Central Park, 5th Avenue, the helicopter launch sites and the Flatiron Building.
The street that it is in is nothing special. And looked even less so as the hotel was completely covered in scaffolding when we were there in October 2006, but there is a post office just a few yards from the hotel which comes in handy.
Inside the hotel, the lobby is very impressive if a little kitchy! Very high ceilings with lots of gold ornate flowers and cherubs! The staff were polite but checking in was a bit of a military procedure with photocopies having to be taken of every piece of documentation we had. We also had problems with them putting the authorisation of our bill through on our credit card twice and therefore using up nearly all of our credit limit. Still atleast there was a lift because we were on the 12th floor!
When booking we decided to go for a Junior Suite and treat ourselves. This came at the princly sum of $220 (approx £120) a night so we were expecting a little bit of luxury. However we were disappointed with the "Suite" which consisted of two tiny rooms that looked down into a service courtyard behind the hotel.
The decor of the room was very tired and the room in general felt dark and slightly oppressive. Not a relaxing atmosphere which wasn't helped by the fact that initially we were given a smoking room - which we were stuck with for the first night as the hotel was fully booked. This was despite having requested a non-smoking room at the time of booking. The hotel staff were not particularly sympathetic and begrudglingly brought us up a can of air freshener that we could spray around.
The rooms were clean, but I certainly didn't feel inclined to spend any considerable amount of time there. Not that we had planned on spending days in our room as there is so much to do, but we did almost feel as though we "had" to go out!
As far as catering is concerned the hospital offers hot drinks and muffins in the mornings. This is all fine, but the hotel has no area other than the lobby to accomodate the guests so it's all a rather rushed affair perching on a chair arm with a cup of coffee on the floor and a muffin on a paper plate! Not a great way to spend breakfast but there are so many other places to eat in NYC that you should definitely take advantage and explore in the mornings.
The hotel also has a small shop attached to it for drinks, postcards, souveneirs etc. And some drink and snack vending machine downstairs. There is also a Subway/Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins cafe just a few yards down the road so if you were starving you could always find somewhere to eat!
I personally wouldn't recommend this hotel but it was recommended to us by some friends so I guess everyone has different "wants" from a hotel. They were very busy when we were there so obviously have no incentive to close any rooms and miss out on business. I certainly will do more resarch into different accomodation next time I'm there.
Advantages: location, location, location Disadvantages: not as luxurious as some might prefer
...Bloomingdales! Each room comes with ensuite bathroom, TV, telephone and air conditioning.
For guests who are feeling fit after a day's shopping, the hotel also has a small but adequate fitness center. For the rest of us, there are vending machines for late-night drinks and snacks, located in the basement! ...
