When my friend and I first arrived in Amsterdam at the central station, we walked to our hotel after stopping off in a shop or so. We found Hotel D'Amsterdam reasonably easily and it was a pleasant surprise to realise the hotel was about 5 minutes walk from the centre of Amsterdam itself. We never needed to rent bikes or anything because we were within walking distance of anything.
My friend and I paid £80 each for a shared room, for 3 nights in Amsterdam. This included breakfast each morning, a TV with about 30 different channels, an en suite bathroom, a fan (which was a life saver because this was during the heatwave in June), a kettle with various teas and coffees and also a fridge (also a lifesaver which we filled with drinks).
We were both surprised with all the stuff we got and although the breakfast was rather basic, it was enough. We didn't expect a gourmet meal and we were happy with what we were provided with.
The hotel is owned by a couple around their 50s who are generally friendly. They can both speak English which is also a plus point. There is a computer that you can pay to use for the internet and there is also some vending machines and a pay phone.
Also, you can use your swipe card key to get in and out of the hotel whenver you please, which was good for us as we tended to stay out late visiting various cafés and bars.
I would definately use this hotel again, mainly because of the level of quality we got for our money. We went to Amsterdam with 2 other guys and they stayed in a different hotel and they ended up paying around £130 each for a shared room and that was a bog standard room with 2 beds,a toilet, shower and a tv (which they couldn't have the control for unless they paid a deposit for!) I think we got the better hotel!
Overall, I was generally impressed with the hotel. I would definately use it again if I was to visit Amsterdam again (more than likely)

Advantages: Location is superb. Very comfortable, great facilities and superb staff! Disadvantages: Nothing, apart from the uncertainty regarding the on-line booking
