The hotel is in the old part of Lille. everything is in walking distance, even the Eurostar station (only about 5-10 mins on foot)
The hotel was clean and the staff were friendly. The breakfasts had no 'hot' dishes, just lovely French sticks, croissants, pan au chocolate , the usual cold meats & cheese, cereals etc. Tea & coffee out of those big flask things! No bar.
The bedroom was cleaned daily as was the shower/toilet / bath. The only downside was the size of the room - it was really small. Hardly any room between the side of the double bed and the patio doors. My wife & I are not big people, but it really was cramped. There was a balcony , but not a great view (into the next building), though you could see the imposing cathedral which is just behind the hotel. We were unlucky with the room size, others in the hotel were bigger. ...

arrived. Despite what the guidebook said about Sunday opening, it was closed for lunch!
Distance-wise for me, it?s not much further than Birmingham, and time-wise, it?s even nearer.
I know where I?d rather spend a weekend.
Incidentally, the return journey, door to door, was just 3 hours, including two tube trains from Waterloo to Hounslow Central, and a 1 mile walk rather than wait 30 mins for the next availible mini-cab - not bad eh?
Useful reading at a price to suit weekenders.
AA Essential Lille - ISBN 0-7495-2423-5 @ £ 3.99. The hotel's free map wasn't bad either!
At least now I know what I've missed, including the Bois De Boulogne (yes, Lille's got one too) a remarkable polygonal citadel dating back over 300 years, The Museum of Modern Art and The Fine Arts Museum. Oh well, it's not far, let's go again when the weather ...

Advantages: cheap, funky, well located. Disadvantages: location not so suitable for families
the mod-cons. After all, this was our first time in Paris, and we did not really intend on being in the room that much. Just to sleep to recharge our batteries, ready for a new days exploring.
After researching long and hard, we settled upon the Londres and Anvers hotel, which is in the Monmartre region of Paris. Now, this area is also very close to what is known as the Parisien red light district, so first thing first, this hotel may not be the most suitable for families. However the hotel itself is very well located, as it is literally two minutes walk from the Gard du Nord, which is one of the largest train stations in the city. We were able to get a train from Charles de Gaulle, to the Gard du Nord for very little, and the hotel was in sight of the main entrance to the station. This was good for us, as we did not really have a clue where ...
