Well I have nearly reviewed all the hotels I saw recently on my Paris trip although I still have some other things to review too from the trip! This hotel is one of the ones I had not really heard much about so didn't really have any prior opinions of it or know what to expect before arriving.
The hotel: The hotel is a 3 star hotel that is quite traditional in terms of the style of the building. The hotel is fairly small with 50 rooms along with a small breakfast room and a small lobby lounge.
Location: The hotel is located in the Montmartre area of Paris at 5 Rue Tholozé in the 18th Arondissemont. It is very near to the famous Moulin Rouge theatre and the Sacre Coeur and is surrounded by lots of little cafes and small restaurants. Being in the 'artist' district the area is lively and full of character. The street the hotel is on is slightly sloped and even though the road at the bottom is quite busy this particular one isn't so location is pretty good for being away from the busy road but, still within a very short walk of where
all the amenities are. An interesting fact is the area that the hotel is located in was used in the film 'Amelie'.
First impressions: Well when we turned up the driver couldn't get right up to the hotel due to some traffic blocking the way so we got out and trouped up the small road to the hotel. I didn't even realise we had got to the front door of the hotel until everyone in front of me starting walking inside! It doesn't stand out as anything special from outside but, it did at least look clean and presentable when I stopped to have a look properly. When I went inside I was pleasantly surprised as it was different to how I had perceived it from stood outside. Inside was a mix of modern touches such as the small lobby lounge with a flat screenpc for guests to use mixed in with the artistic and very Parisian style furniture and the art that hung on nearly every wall. I actually if I'm honest couldn't decide if I liked it or not as I did because it was boutique and intimate and at the same time some of the decor was too 'old fashioned' looking for my taste. However I think if you came to this hotel you wouldn't be disgusted by it and as you don't recoil in horror when you check in to a hotel that that has to be a good thing!
The rooms: I would say I expected the rooms to be different after the decor of the hotel in the lobby and I guess it was because they seemed a little boring somehow - the lobby area had nice chairs and lots of art along with flowers and everywhere seemed to have the buildings original shape. I guess I was expecting the rooms to follows suit but, instead it was just a simple room! There was nothing actually wrong with them and in fact they were quite clean and considering the hotels location down a smaller side street there were even quite bright rooms. The rooms had everything you would need whilst staying here such as safes in the rooms and they all have pretty nice bathrooms with a bath tub and over tub shower. The rooms also had TV's in them and WI-FI access too. I think I just expected them to be 'quirky' in some way! I would say though if you don't mind being on a higher floor to request one of the top floor rooms as some of these ones have the slanted walls on one side and these give the room a more traditional look although of course you may not like that idea! I am not sure if the hotel actually have any rooms adapted for disabled guests although if they did I am not sure if guests for instance in a wheelchair, would be able to get in the lift anyway as it seemed such a tiny lift and only two people could get in at any one time. However it may be worth asking the hotel directly before booking if you do require an adapted room.
Food and drink: The hotel have a small breakfast room which is located in the basement and I thought this was quite a nice room with again a modern touch but, at the same time as looking like the original building had not been modified much. The breakfast room can be reached by either lift from any of the floors or you can take the spiral staircase from the lobby. The room has the old brick wall which gives it that traditional charm but, the tables and chairs are quite modern and in black and white which I personally thought made the room look unusual but funky. Breakfast is a mix of hot and cold food with a variety of drinks served and is table service. There is no bar in the hotel and breakfast is the only meal served in the hotel.
Other facilities: Unfortunately for those type of people who like their hotel to have a multitude of amenities they will be disappointed - apart from the internet access in the lobby for those who don't have a laptop with them to use the Wi-Fi, there is nothing else the hotel has to offer! The reception can arrange tours and book excursions for guest from the leaflets provided in the lobby but, other than that this hotel is more of a bed and breakfast type place.
Price: The hotel is a good price for the standard of the hotel and its cracking location. You should be able to get rates for this hotel at around Ł65-70 per night based on two people sharing and including breakfast depending of course, on when you want to stay.
Overall opinion: As I mentioned earlier I couldn't quite decided if I liked it or not when I first arrived at the hotel but, when I'm thinking about it now it is definitely somewhere I would stay. I do think it would be more suited to those who like a simple hotel with few amenities but, like to stay somewhere that has a bit of original charm as I do feel it was this side of things I liked over anything else. As anyone who reads my reviews on a regular basis will know I am actually quite fussy about hotels and this hotel is somewhere I would be more than happy to stay in if given the choice again.
