Advantages: Central location but quiet, elegant, luxurious Disadvantages: Central location but not too easy to find
many people are inside. If the place is heaving with locals then it will surely be good, if it is empty avoid it. The Hoteldu Centre was packed but Madame managed to find us a table after a five minute wait, and as you do in France, we enjoyed talking about all and sundry in French and English to our neighbours on an adjoining table, whilst enjoying some excellent seafood.
None of this would have taken place but for the fact that we were able to take advantage of a very generous offer from P & O Ferries that allowed us to take our car from Dover to Calais by car ferry for £26 each way with no specified return date.
Let me make one important point here for anyone who worries about being seasick. These modern ferries nowadays are state of the art in avoiding rock and roll!! I am not the best sailor in the world but could survive ...
Advantages: Friendly staff, quick email replies, website in English, 24 hours access, located at the seafront Disadvantages: kettle would have been nice especially for people who decide to stay for longer periods.
I have stayed in the Hoteldu Golf for one night only when travelling to Europe. I would not say Calais is a great holiday destination as we all know it is not, but if you are looking for a place to stay overnight and then get ahead with your journey, I don't think there is a better place than Hoteldu Golf in this price range. Rooms are spacious and feel fresh, with TV, fridge, stove and a microwave. WiFi internet connection throughout the building. Staff is nice and helpfull.
Hotel itself is located right at the seafront, so as you may expect there are restaurants around. It takes 10 minutes to walk to the town centre, meaning no need to drive which is good especially if you want to enjoy local nightlife.
I must say I've been expecting much less for the money they have charged, thus, overall I'm very happy with my stay and if ...
I first saw Hoteldu Nord as part of a double bill with a film by Jean Renoir (I forget which - though I think the brilliant Le Crime De Monsieur Lange) and I was frankly going to see the Renoir film and thought, hmmm, I'll just have to sit through Hoteldu Nord and grin and bear it. Something about the film just really didn't appeal. Then right from the opening shot that tracks down from the bridge over the canal Saint Martin and along the side of the canal to where the two lovers, played by Annabella and Jean-Pierre Aumont, settle against one another on a bench, despairing and apparently doomed I simply didn't look back. I couldn't.
Since that Sunday afternoon I have always had something of a soft spot for Hoteldu Nord. It is firmly placed in the traditional of French cinema of the thirties. Like his contemporaries, Renoir ...
