Back in January I fancied having a few days away on my own and decided to go to York as it was far enough away to feel like a mini holiday, and I had never been before.

The Hotel du Vin York is a new addition to the group, opening its doors in Autumn 2007 and has 44 bedrooms. I caught the train to York and the hotel was only a short walk from the station. It is situated just a short way from the race course so I am sure it is popular when the races are on.

On first impressions the building from the outside was really nice with a large driveway and massive entrance door. But inside it wasn’t clear which way the reception desk was and when I found it, it wasn’t that accessible. The desk was situated behind three large pillars which didn’t leave much room between the desk and the pillars and it was a good job I didn’t have any large bags. On check out there was a guy in front of me and I had to wait in the corridor for him to check out as there was no room at the desk because of the pillars. I understand that it is a listed building but surely there would have been a better place to put reception?

All the rooms have names rather than numbers and you get shown to the room by the receptionist, but you do have to pay attention as you don’t get shown again! My room was across a courtyard with no cover on it. Being January it was raining and on several occasions I got wet walking across there. Not very well designed I don’t think.

The room I was given was really large just for me. It had a king size bed and a chaise lounge at the end of the bed. However, the curtains were too long so the chaise lounge had to be pulled out in order for the curtains to go behind them when drawn. This was fine apart from the housekeeper kept moving it back when the room was cleaned.

The bathroom was an average hotel bathroom with a bath and a ‘monsoon’ shower over the bath. It is called a monsoon shower as it has a really large shower head and is really powerful, so it feels like you are showering in a monsoon! The bath was also really nice and deep. There are a selection of toiletries that you can take away with you including shower gel, shampoo and conditioner.

In the bathroom there is also a bathmat provided, which I think is a really nice touch as you don’t have to get out the bath onto a hard floor. There are also robes provided, again this is really luxurious because after having a bath or shower you can then just lounge around in a robe and watch TV.

There is a mini bar in the room, which was my favourite, mainly because there is a jar of Jelly Belly jelly beans, which I scoffed straight away. But they are quite pricy at £4.50 per jar, but you do get a lot in there. There are also two flavours of crisps, cashew nuts, peanuts, chocolate raisins and a large selection of drinks – both alcoholic and non. There is complimentary tea and coffee provided along with a selection of herbal teas and hot chocolate.

As I was on my own I didn’t fancy eating in the restaurant so on both nights I ordered room service. This can be ordered from the same menu that is available in the bistro so it is very extensive and lots of choice. It is an a la carte menu so all the dishes are individually priced and main courses are around £15.00 depending on what you have.

On both nights my food arrived promptly, however on one of the nights they had forgotten my side orders. I called the bistro to let them know and they were brought over very quickly. The food was delicious, and even though it had to be carried through the courtyard it was still quite hot. On one night I ordered a sticky toffee pudding as well which is my favourite and it was delicious.

Even though I didn’t want to go to dinner on my own, I did go for breakfast on my own each morning, armed with a newspaper to hide behind. There are two choices for breakfast – the continental priced at £9.95 which includes a selection of cereals, juices, pastries and fruit from the buffet table. This was well stocked each morning and had my favourite – banana bread.

Guests can also choose to have the cooked breakfast which is £13.50. This includes the buffet selection but also you get a choice of a full English, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon or eggs Benedict. I had full English on both mornings and although I can’t eat the eggs there was still plenty on my plate to fill me up.

I didn’t feel too conspicuous at breakfast on my own as lots of business people often eat on there own. It was quite a nice experience and didn’t feel rushed at all. I was able to relax and read my paper.

There was one thing which annoyed me and that was the wardrobe. It had a light inside which came on when you opened the door, however the mechanism had broken and it stayed on all night. I hate sleeping in a light room – it has to be almost pitch black, but I could see this light shining through the crack in the door and it did annoy me. I didn’t feel it was too much of an issue to say anything but would have been nice if it went off at night.

Overall I had a really comfortable stay. The hotel is within easy walking distance of both the station and the city centre. The old walls which surround the city are about 5 minutes walk as well and I spent a good day exploring. I would definitely go back, probably not on my own and would experience the hotel a bit more by having dinner in the bistro. I might also request a room in the main building this time as well!

The Hotel du Vin chain do seem to be located in some good places and interesting buildings. I've eaten well at the one in Tunbridge Wells.

It's sad, I've gotten used to eating in hotel restaurants on my own! boo hoo!
