A House with History

Advantages: A great musuem for all ages - much more than just a collection of objects
Disadvantages: Not fully accessible to wheel chair users or people with limited mobilty

With not much more than thirty hours to spend in Amsterdam (and still eat, drink and sleep!), I was forced to make some tough decisions about what could and couldn't be done. In the end I decided that I should visit the Anne Frank House, partly because it ws raining heavily and it was obvious that it was time to do some indoor activities and partly because I had visited Auschwitz earlier in the year and am very interested in this period of history. Background ------------------ Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929. In 1933, Otto Frank and his wife, Edith, decided to leave Germany with Anne and their older daughter, Margot, to make a new life in Amsterdam because, being Jewish, they feared that their lives would not be safe in Nazi Germany. They lived happily in Amsterdam until the Germans invaded and occupied ...

Review of Anne Frank's House, Amsterdam

The Anne Frank House

Advantages: a very moving learning experience
Disadvantages: long queues of people

The Anne Frank House, on the Prinsengracht, was the foremost in my mind, when I visited Amsterdam. The place I had wanted to visit for over thirty years. Ever since I had first read "The Diary of Anne Frank". It is hard to imagine this quiet canalside street, echoing with the clatter of jackboots on the cobblestones, and the harsh, guttural commands as Dutch Jews were herded from their homes and onto trucks bound for who knew where? The tree-lined street looks to have changed little in the fifty years since. Other than the constant lines of people waiting to pay homage to a young girl whose life was cut tragically short by one of the greatest crimes against humanity. It was Otto Frank's wish that the house remain as it was after the Germans looted it, so the living quarters are empty save for a model on each floor which shows how ...

Review of Anne Frank's House, Amsterdam

Maybe I Am a City Girl After All

Advantages: fantastic location, good breakfast, friendly and helpful staff, comfy bed, some character
Disadvantages: rooms could be bigger, a bit shabby, breakfast not included

between midnight and the morning. We never had any problems, but were told tales of people who arrived at the door in the middle of the night and were so drunk that they couldn't operate their entry door key and slept on the pavement despite having paid for the room (although there is a number to phone displayed at the door in case of emergencies). The staff we encountered in Amsterdam House were helpful and spoke good English, and the one receptionist we chatted to most was particularly friendly and provided us with fascinating insights to Dutch culture in general and Amsterdam specifics in particular. Verdict I does perhaps depend on what you are used to and what you are after, but for a short break in the centre of Amsterdam the Amsterdam House Hotel did admirably. Enough character and friendliness to make it memorable, stunning ...
