With not much more than thirty hours to spend in Amsterdam (and still eat, drink and sleep!), I was forced to make some tough decisions about what could and couldn't be done.
In the end I decided that I should visit the Anne Frank House, partly because it ws raining heavily and it was obvious that it was time to do some indoor activities and partly because I had visited Auschwitz earlier in the year and am very interested in this period of history.
Background
------------------
Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929. In 1933, Otto Frank and his wife, Edith, decided to leave Germany with Anne and their older daughter, Margot, to make a new life in Amsterdam because, being Jewish, they feared that their lives would not be safe in Nazi Germany.

Advantages: a very moving learning experience Disadvantages: long queues of people
The Anne Frank House, on the Prinsengracht, was the foremost in my mind, when I visited Amsterdam. The place I had wanted to visit for over thirty years. Advantages: fantastic location, good breakfast, friendly and helpful staff, comfy bed, some character Disadvantages: rooms could be bigger, a bit shabby, breakfast not included
between midnight and the morning. The staff we encountered in AmsterdamHouse were helpful and spoke good English, and the one receptionist we chatted to most was particularly friendly and provided us with fascinating insights to Dutch culture in general and Amsterdam specifics in particular.
Verdict
I does perhaps depend on what you are used to and what you are after, but for a short break in the centre of Amsterdam the AmsterdamHouse Hotel did admirably. Enough character and friendliness to make it memorable, stunning ...
