Having watched Robert De Niro's directorial debut for the first time since its 1993 release, I have to be honest and say that my initial reactions are mixed. Don't get me wrong, I did really enjoy The Bronx Tale for its ambition in tackling various themes of family, trust, anti-racism, and love. Though, at times, it did feel as if the movie was more impressive on the ideas front, rather than the actual execution.
The story concerns working-class bus driver Lorenzo Anello (De Niro) and his son Calogero. "C", for short, soon witnesses a murder committed by local gangster Sonny (Chazz Palminteri), and is asked to identify the killer by the police. But, he doesn't and Sonny walks free, which prompts a developing relationship between the two, with Sonny treating C as if he was his own son (much to the dismay of C's own Father).

‘A Bronx Tale’, released in 1993, is more than just a straightforward gangster movie, dealing with familiar issues in a different way to other films in the genre, such as the ‘Godfather’ trilogy or ‘Goodfellas’. Whereas many gangster flicks rely on the depiction of graphic, bloody violence to get their message across, Chazz Palminteri’s screenplay for this film took a much more understated approach. It is the simple story of the early life of Calogero Anello, one boy growing up in an Italian neighbourhood in the Bronx, and relates how involvement with the local hoods changed and ultimately saved his life.

It is evident that Robert De Niro in his directorial debut attempts to make a mafia movie that is a little bit different, and "A Bronx Tale" is definately that. De Niro draws on his experiences from classic mafia films that he has acted in, such as "Goodfellas" and "Godfather 2" to create a very powerful film, one that almost had me in tears. The music throughout the film is well chosen and I like how De Niro has used many relatively unknown actors in order to create a more "authentic" feel about the film. The storyline is good and provides an excellent depiction of racial tension at the times, I particularly enjoyed the scenes where Colagero is a young boy, sharing banter with his father.
