Let Howth be your oyster

Advantages: Seals; seafood; very pretty and interesting; close to Dublin
Disadvantages: Can get very busy

...Cranberries all have homes in Howth, while previous residents include Conor Cruise O'Brien, Phil Lynott and none other than twice Eurovision winner Johnny Logan. As we walked further we picked out our favourite houses in between greeting other walkers. With its crags and cliffs and seaside paths, Howth is a popular destination for ramblers and hikers, understandably so as it combines stunning scenery with moderately challenging terrain; once you ...
...rewarded with some great views of the Wicklow Hills. HG Wells described what he saw as "'The finest view west of Naples" - and I'm inclined to agree.

In the village of Howth there are lots of examples of the traditional painted stone cottages so typical of Ireland but there are also as many imposing Georgian residences of the kind so popular for Irish picture postcards subjects. You don't need to be an expert to be able ... more

Rough with the smooth

Advantages: shops, pubs, art and villages
Disadvantages: homeless, dicey areas

not part of the House of Fraser or Debenhams groups. Clerys is particularly good, as is the posh one by Tower Records whose name has escaped me. It also has excellent other shops – a branch of every chain store and about five million Dunnes’s (only to be expected). The architecture is absolutely marvellous and worth a (sober) look around. The villages around Dublin which are now part of Dublin such as Howth and Mallahide, are absolutely picturesque and worth a look round if you’re interested in that kind of thing (and unluckily for me the people I was with were) and they are all served by Bus Atha Cliath, Dublin’s bus service. The bus service in Dublin is very good if you can get your head round them, apart from maybe they should run a little more often and shouldn’t make you get off at the terminus (I ...

So You Are Coming To Dublin - Taxis

Advantages: Good Value
Disadvantages: Bad late night transport

~ ~ As a taxi-driver here in Dublin's "Fair City" for the past seven years, I'd like to give intending visitors and tourists some advice about getting about in the city. ~ ~ On arrival at the airport you will be faced with a trip of about 8 miles into the city centre. Your options are a taxi or a recently introduced "Air Coach" service. To date, Dublin has no rail link from the city to the airport. The coach is only really an option if you are staying at one of the hotels on its drop route, otherwise you will end up having to get a taxi anyway at the other end. Also, if there is more than one person in your group, a taxi will prove the most economical alternative. There are ordinary saloon cars, and also people carriers which can take up to 8 passengers plus luggage, at no extra cost in relation to an ordinary car ...

Review of Getting around in Dublin

Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Rum

Advantages: See text of opinion
Disadvantages: See text of opinion

Howth in north Co. Dublin, which was removed when the lighthouse was modernised in 1972, and received a new electric light. The light was originally powered by gas when it was first used way back in 1902, and later was later modified to run on gas, throwing out light equivalent to that of over 2 million candles. Nowadays the brightness has been toned down somewhat to allow it to be used in the Museum, but it’s still a fascinating exhibit. ~ ~ The Maritime Museum is easy enough to find. If you want to make a special trip from Dublin to visit it, then the DART (local rail service) will drop you within 5 minutes walk. Head for the Dun Loghaire main street, and Haigh Terrace is the first left turn past the entrance to the new, modern shopping centre. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Opening Times October to Easter. Sundays only 1 PM to 5 PM ...
