Advantages: Stunning scenery, cheap, lovely people, great facilities

Hua Hin

I lived in Hua Hin in Thailand for a while and thought it was time to write a review of my experience of the place. I have included the conversion from English £ to Thai baht to give you a rough idea when I'm mentioning cost further into the review.

1 British pound = 49.9982745 Thai baht

Hua Hin is in the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan with a population of around 60,000 people. The name means ...
...beach.

Hua Hin is a reasonably small town, which is approximately 3 hours South in a taxi from Bangkok (which will cost you about 1500 - 2200 baht) on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand. You can also access the town by train or by small plane as Hua Hin has both a small airport and a railway station. The resort was discovered in the early 1920s by King Rama VII as an ideal getaway from the hectic metropolis of Bangkok, it is Thailand's ... more

The Land of Smiles

Advantages: relatively undiscovered when compared to Phuket & Koh Samui
Disadvantages: long journey from Bangkok

...a ten night holiday to Hua Hin, staying at the Anantara Resort & Spa (http://huahin.anantara.com/default.aspx). Flights were via Emirates from Manchester to Dubai then on to Bangkok. We were then picked up in Bangkok via mini bus for the journey down to Hua Hin. Cost was £795 each for flight, ten nights accomodation and airport transfers. I must confess that I had never heard of Hua Hin at the time but the brochure promised a largely un-spoilt but ...
...not?” History of Hua Hin A little bit of history on Hua Hin would not go amiss at this stage. This has been a famous, popular holiday resort for over 70 years, largely for the Thai royal family and also with other Thais. It has been around as a destination well before the likes of Phuket or Koh Samui, both of which are recent discoveries with have grown rapidly and been over-developed. As such it seems to be off the radar of the backpackers and ...

Colonial Style at the Sofitel Central

Advantages: Quite, pleasant and relaxing.
Disadvantages: Limited activity outside the hotel.

The royal resort of Hua Hin is a delightful sleepy little town in SE Thailand. There are no famous tourist attractions, not too many girlie bars and a lovely long sandy beach. The first week of our visit coincided with a travelling market and a funfair, so there was extra activity there. This was around the time of the queen's birthday (9th August if I recall) so there may have been a connection. There are a few shops and a small night market, a ...
...one mildly unpleasant experience in Hua Hin, and that was the day we arrived. On arrival we could here drums beating on the beach, right in line with our room. When we strolled down there was a group of youngsters dancing and cavorting, and generally having a good time. That was fine, except that the drums carried on right through the night and were still going a 7 o'clock the next morning. It appeared to be a group of gypsies or hippies who were ...

Good family little village

Advantages: Night market
Disadvantages: A bit boring

Hua Hin is a village about 2.5 hours by car from Bangkok. It boast quite a few nice night markets although they are directed to tourist and you wouldn't really see any Thai natives shopping there (selection of fake bags, fake designer T-shirt) however there is quite a few food street vendors where you can taste the Thai delicacies at a very very cheap price. There are also quite a good selection of bars and restaurant (a lot of them seafood!!)and ...

In my opinion Hua Hin is a nice little village if you are going on a family holiday or in couple however this is definatly not a place where you are going to party like mad and can become boring very quickly (oh well, it did bore me after a few days there!) It is a very relaxing place but do not expect a lot happening there. ...

Hua Hin Beach

Advantages: quite,relaxing,etc.
Disadvantages: -

Well, Hua Hin is not much far from Bangkok, only 3 hours southwest of Bangkok. I have known that here is claimed as the Thailand's oldest beach resort. This beach is located in the western side of Thai Gulf,in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, here is very peaceful and essentially relaxing. I don't like Pattaya, where is very crowded....as well as the water sport is provided overthere. I can give you some example places to visit if you can visit there...Khao ...

An exceptional airline

Advantages: Frequent flights, friendly service
Disadvantages: Relatively expensive, flight times change, strange food!

I had the pleasure of flying with Bangkok Airways last year from Bangkok to Koh Samui. I booked my flight with a UK travel agent and it cost just over £100, although prices do vary throughout the year. It is also possible to book tickets directly, via the Bangkokair website, as well as with online travel agencies. Bangkok Airways (36 years old this year!) provides domestic flights within Thailand (destinations include Hua Hin, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattya) as well as flights from Thailand to Laos, Vietnam, China, Singapore and Cambodia. For travellers to the island of Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, Bangkok Airways offers upwards of ten flights a day. The flight takes 50 minutes and the plane takes you over some fabulous scenery - imagine little green islands dotted all over an azure blue sea - simply gorgeous ...

Great for Golfing

Advantages: Good courses,Cheap, Friendly people,Great food
Disadvantages: Traffic problems,

business men who say golfing facilities are improving all the time and are probably now among the very best in South East Asia. What is more golf is much cheaper, on the average, than in other emerging golfing destinations such as Portugal, Malaysia, Hawaii and such like. There are now around 70 courses in Thailand and a large number are being planned. Of existing courses, golfing buffs say that at least ten of them are international standard and could stand comparison with some of the best in the US and Great Britain. Hua Hin, on the Gulf of Thailand's west coast, an easy 220 km drive on Highway 4 from Bangkok, is blessed with miles of beckoning blue water and white ...

Bangkok on Sea or Family Friendly Fun?

Advantages: Offers something for everyone, cheap
Disadvantages: Not easy on the eye, choose where you stay based on the kind of holiday you want

I am sure, up until the day he died, my husband wondered how he managed to convince me that Pattaya would be a great destination for a family holiday. However, he did manage it and more to the point, our visit was a memorable one. Whilst I cannot say I have any desire to ever go back, I am glad I have seen one of Thailand?s main beach resorts which is the antithesis to more traditional destinations such as Koh Samui or Hua Hin. Pattaya is often known as ?Bangkok on Sea?, and the town itself is situated just over 100 miles from Bangkok, or about a 90 minute drive away. We arrived in Bangkok and as ever, spent the first night there attempting to sleep off our jetlag. Next morning found us at the Ekamai bus station purchasing tickets from a woman who was most reluctant to give my husband his change. We had decided to travel from ...
