Humber Bridge

... Indeed, this particular bridge has recently featured on these very pages, and for good reason, as being an economic millstone to the Humberside area and a drain on the finances of local residents, who have little other choice but to use it in their daily commute, paying through the nose for ... £151 MILLION WELL SPENT?

Advantages: It's BIG! Gets you to Lincolnshire from East Yorks.......
Disadvantages: ....at what cost?

...
WHAT IS THE HUMBER BRIDGE?

It is a suspension bridge, crossing the river Humber from Hessle on the northern, or Hull side of the river, to Barton on the Lincolnshire or southern side. As with the suspension bridge at Clifton, this is purely a road bridge - albeit a vastly larger one - with a separate pavement and cycleway on each side of the dual carriageway.

PLAY FANFARE NOW!

When opened by the ...
...Partners, consulting engineers on the Humber Bridge project (almost unbelievably since 1928!) was a company founded by Sir Charles Fox, a railway engineer by trade, who received his knighthood for …… building the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park!

Nobody could accuse the Humber Bridge of not having an illustrious pedigree!

Where other such ventures were praised and publicised for all the right reasons, this one was bound ... more

There's no place like Hull

Advantages: Cheap, friendly, near the sea, near the countryside
Disadvantages: Could do with a few more major highstreet shops

As a resident of Hull myself i have found that the residents either love it or hate it. And having lived in Stoke-on-Trent for over 4 years, I can proudly say that I love my home town, or should I say City. Whenever Hull is mentioned on the TV, and usually it is in the comic context (see The Office, Spaced and Blackadder Goes Fourth, to name but a few), it is often described as Hell and smells of fish etc. So what if by changing a letter in its name, Hull becomes Hell, why don't we apply the same to Notting Hill for instance? No, Hull is a little known City, and City it is, which many people wouldn't know. We have the Humber Bridge and Country Park for afternoon strolls/rides during the summer. We have the Marina for summer drinking and folk and jazz festivals, and likewise Queen's gardens. We have The Deep, Ferens Art Gallery ...

Review of Hull in General

This is a place to be

Advantages: It has it all
Disadvantages: well its Hull

Hull, Kingston upon Hull - it can't really make it's mind up. This is probably the most underrated city in the UK. It is about the 6th biggest in England and as a result has to deal wih the complexities of all big cities. The council has just had a cash injection of about £2billion, which means it has lots to spend. What you actually have is a city which is so far from any other that it has become independant of its local community. All the leisure, entertainment, sport and shopping facilities are as good as you'll ever need ( outside London, Edinburgh, Birmingham etc.) It offers history and arts with some excellent facilties and has a strong tourist presence which unfortunately noone knows about. This is somewhere that should be visited - even if it's only to see the Humber Bridge a huge achievement and still remains ...

Review of Hull in General

CONCORDE - THE EPITOMY OF ELEGANCE

Advantages: Fantastic way to travel
Disadvantages: None

, with all the accompanying noises from thunderous Bristol Hercules piston engines ( this was in the days when Pontius was a pilot!). On Concorde it was virtually noiseless and it was possible to balance a pencil on end on the table, as quoted in publicity releases. Before we reached Humberside Airport we had a marvellous view of the Humber Bridge prior to landing, which was as smooth as the take-off had been. This then was the end of an exciting two days which we are not likely to forget. As far as the flight was concerned, it was a one-off as we are not in the high income bracket like David Frost, who flies regularly to New York on Concorde. Let us hope that the test flights have been successful and we shall see this graceful machine flying once again from Heathrow. ...
