A Hotel in Budapest with a Funky Decor

Advantages: Good location, near to main attractions, excellent retro decor
Disadvantages: Supercilious staff and expensive ale

On my last trip to Budapest I was very lucky to choose a hotel within walking distance of the centre and quite a few of the main attractions. The Mercure Budapest was formerly known as The Taverna and is located about two minutes walk away from the bank of the River Danube. We arrived by taxi from the airport which is roughly about 17 kilometres and as I paid the taxi driver I remember thinking that I really liked the fact that the front entrance which is quite grand was on a main road with tourists milling around. I much prefer this than being stuck away down a dark alleyway. I was impressed with the front entrance of the hotel with its glass windows shining through to the myriad of lights inside and beautifully manicured conifers sitting upright in purple pots with the Mercure sign embellished on the front. The last time I stayed in ...

KK Opera Hotel Budapest

Advantages: Good city centre location, great froiendly staff
Disadvantages: small rooms, poor showers.

, the opera, restaurants. Historic buildings etc. There is a restaurant called the Belcanto which is right outside the main door and on the corner of the same building. It has a famous reputation for its singing waiters. I looked through the windows but didn't fancy it alone but it looked like fun. It certainly received a rave mention in another Ciao review of Budapest. My one really big accolade was for the staff - they were so friendly and efficient. I tend to eat in my hotel when I'm alone and I had lunch, dinner and the free breakfast. The food that I paid for was fine. The waitress where I had dinner was so ahead of the game - without even looking in my direction - there were plenty of other diners - she seemed to know instinctively when I wanted something else and almost appeared by telepathy. Breakfast was a large self service ...

Budapest Marriott

Advantages: Beautiful hotel with friendly staff
Disadvantages: none

In February, I went to Budapest with my parents for a few days. My dad booked the break over the internet (flights and accommodation) so he chose the hotel that we stayed in. Having stayed in a Marriott hotel on a previous holiday, I was not disappointed when he told us that we would be staying in a Marriott in Budapest. What I didn't know until we got there was that we would be staying in a junior suite! (The room was discounted when we stayed so we got a better room for our money! :) The Budapest Marriott is located on the riverside of Pest and had a fantastic view of the river Danube. We were lucky enough to have a water facing room. The hotel was within walking distance of the main attractions in the city centre. The hotel was about 20 minutes form the airport and cost approximately 35 Euros (about Ł24) to get there. Upon ...
