...about this, and had to leave!!) New York is renowned for it's galleries, and I was not disppointed.
UN
Slightly off the beaten tourist path, is the UN headquaters. I went to have a look at the building, but on arrival found you could have a tour, so I signed up. You arent; allowed to just wonder around inside, but I found the tour really helpful and interesting, and it turned out to be one of my favourite parts of my trip. The lady who showed us round, asked everyone in the tour where they were from, and made special effort to make show is the gifts given by each of our countries. (quite a bit of the tour is looking at the art/rooms given by member countires) We also saw the different meeting rooms, including the security council, and the general assembly, which was facinating. If there is a meeting in progress you can't go in, but we...

...York has a plethora of art galleries, mostly in private hands and some under municipal control. York art gallery, located in exhibition square, in the centre of York, is a York City Council owned gallery, and has recently been refurbished to the tune of nearly half a million pounds, from the heritage lottery fund and was reopened a couple of months ago by the city's Lord Mayor.
The collection features works spanning 600 years from British and European art displayed in themed areas under the headings of people, places, stories, devotion, and morality. This is an interesting way of organising the works on display, and a seemingly increasing trend amongst gallery collections over recent decades, one that I first experienced at the Tate Modern in London.

Advantages: Loads to see and do, amazing architecture, great people, brilliant atmosphere Disadvantages: Not close enough to the UK!!
...If anyone has been considering going to New York then they should definitely bite the bullet and go. It is well worth the visit and the 7 hour flight. You have all the well known attractions such as Statue of Liberty, Time Square, Empire State, Grand Central Station, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, great food and great shopping. But New York has so much more to offer. There is a multitude of galleries to trawl around for hours on end. The streets are brilliant to wonder around and just see New York life going on from day to day. I decided to walk from our Hotel near Time Square down to Liberty Island and have a look around that area. It was well worth the aching feet, I walked through a number of different neighbour hoods on the way seeing all walks of life, shops, restuarants and buildings. New York used to have a reputation...

The New Yorker is in an excellent midtown location with the subway (lines A, C & E) literally steps outside. Being on the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street this meant good access to Macy's, Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and the... more
Postmodernism, eh? It's a funny old bag of fish. Even the holier-than-thou critics don't quite seem to know what it's all about. They argue whether it's
a) a revolt against modernism,
b) a progression of modernism,
c) both of these and more
or d) more
If you want to stay in Central New York then this is the hotel to book. It is actually IN Times Square! It's a huge modern hotel with over 45 floors so some of the views are great. There is a bar at the top which is a lovely place to have a drink,... more
